Apparently, Peterson\u2019s departure as host of 6PR\u2019s Perth Live came with little warning.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe made us aware last week of what he was thinking,\u201d says Byrnes.<\/p>\n
The question of whether billionaire John Singleton will buy Nine\u2019s radio stations elicits another chuckle from Byrnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSteve, there is a sales process underway being headed up by the CEO,\u201d he laughs. \u201cI\u2019ll leave any commentary around that to Mr Stanton.\u201d<\/p>\n
With a continued growth in streaming of Nine\u2019s talk stations, Byrnes is asked about some recent technical issues with Google speakers, which prompted an influx of calls to 2GB from listeners saying they were having problems picking up the station.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat was really interesting is how passionate our listeners are in listening via (this) device,\u201d Byrnes observes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone that has been listening to 2GB knows that we have been talking about this on-air, saying that A), this is not our fault and B), we are working, as the industry is, to rectify it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThose calls were filtering through our engineering department and coming to me. I consume, basically, all my radio by streaming and I wasn\u2019t having any problems. But I\u2019m listening by the app.\u201d<\/p>\n
Byrnes says they were quickly able to pinpoint the issue, which was Google-related.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen we could tell the audience \u2013 as we were on air and talking about it \u2026 this is relating to Google Home and Google Nest any Google devices \u2026 one really good way to overcome it is to download the app and listen via the app.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat was really interesting is how passionate people are in relation to consuming (our content) via a digital device, in this instance, Google.\u201d<\/p>\n
And not just younger listeners.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were a lot of mature voices ringing us and telling us they were having problems,\u201d says Byrnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that, also, is really encouraging. I\u2019ve always known, I think proudly so, that, say, the 40-55 + demo are very quick adopters of technology. And the amount of our P1s or our long-term listeners ringing up telling us \u2018I can\u2019t listen! I walked into the kitchen and I\u2019ve said: Google, turn on GB, and it\u2019s not working!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they\u2019re not happy! Because that\u2019s how they\u2019re consuming our product daily.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhich is really, really encouraging \u2026 because the audience is adapting to this technology.\u201d<\/p>\n
Byrnes says at one point, 2GB Breakfast host Ben Fordham rang him, saying \u201cMate, I need to be talking about this on air, because we\u2019re getting so many calls.\u201d<\/p>\n
Byrnes says Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) is leading the charge in terms of rectifying the problem.<\/p>\n
His message to listeners in the meantime?<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know it\u2019s frustrating. We are working with you. Bear with us. This is a much wider problem than just our radio network. But we can\u2019t hide from it, because people are so passionate about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
