Hearing about the dramatic results Reis had seen in older people who\u2019d started lifting weights, Johnston was keen for her 82-year-old mum Rhoda to try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a45444072\/weight-training-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a45444072\/weight-training-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight training\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">weight training<\/a>, too. The NHS says that a brisk 10-minute daily walk has many health benefits, and counts towards your 150 minutes of weekly exercise, as recommended in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-for-adults-aged-19-to-64\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-for-adults-aged-19-to-64\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\" physical activity guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> physical activity guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64<\/a>. Well, at 82, Rhoda hopes to get there and possibly beyond, with Johnston writing in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honest.scot\/health-fitness\/rebuilding-mum-dad-our-strength-training-regimen\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.honest.scot\/health-fitness\/rebuilding-mum-dad-our-strength-training-regimen\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"post\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> that she\u2019s now determined to be able to walk upright again unaided for much longer periods of time. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65043664\/how-many-push-ups-build-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65043664\/how-many-push-ups-build-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"building muscle\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">building muscle<\/a> later in life, then, Rhoda has also improved her mobility, essentially reaping double rewards. So, how did she do it, and what routine does she follow now?<\/p>\n<p>The importance of compound movements<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Aware of Reis\u2019s work with 98-year-old Merce Hershey, who improved her bone density through weight training, Johnston&#8217;s parents were keen to try a similar programme, in which compound movements are key. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">As Johnston explains in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c95u1Lf5nrw\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c95u1Lf5nrw\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"two-month follow-up\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two-month follow-up<\/a> of Rhoda&#8217;s strength training programme, a compound movement \u2018basically means working multiple muscle groups with one exercise, which is one of the best ways to build all-over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/yoga\/a65409983\/yoga-vs-pilates-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/yoga\/a65409983\/yoga-vs-pilates-benefits\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength<\/a> \u2013 and in our experience, that happens pretty quickly.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/collective\/ask\/a41387550\/barbell-exercises-upper-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/collective\/ask\/a41387550\/barbell-exercises-upper-body\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"barbell\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">barbell<\/a>, she adds, has also been key and helped Johnston herself see more progress than a year of working out at the gym three times a week. \u2018Although I was going through the motions and doing leg presses and curls and seated overhead presses and pull downs, I didn\u2019t make half the progress that I have using compound movements with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/g40648096\/best-barbell-pads\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/g40648096\/best-barbell-pads\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"barbell\" data-node-id=\"15.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">barbell<\/a>, where I\u2019m covering several muscle groups at once and just gradually increasing the weight week to week,\u2019 she says in the video.<\/p>\n<p>Rhoda\u2019s workout routine<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Rhoda has been training under Reis\u2019s guidance via online video training sessions.<\/p>\n<p>MondaysWeighted vest squats<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">As outlined in Clare\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honest.scot\/health-fitness\/rebuilding-mum-dad-our-strength-training-regimen\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.honest.scot\/health-fitness\/rebuilding-mum-dad-our-strength-training-regimen\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"write-up\" data-node-id=\"21.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write-up<\/a> of her parents\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a65328556\/perimenopause-weight-loss-strength-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/a65328556\/perimenopause-weight-loss-strength-transformation\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"21.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strength training<\/a> routine, Rhoda uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g35468087\/best-weighted-vests\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/gym-wear\/g35468087\/best-weighted-vests\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weighted vest\" data-node-id=\"21.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">weighted vest<\/a> rather than the bar for this exercise. She began with 1kg added to the vest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65045969\/how-many-squats-per-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65045969\/how-many-squats-per-day\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"squatting\" data-node-id=\"21.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">squatting<\/a> down to a bench. When she progressed to around 18kg on the vest, Rhoda slightly lowered the bench height and vest weight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65218137\/pendulum-squat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a65218137\/pendulum-squat\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"squatting\" data-node-id=\"21.9\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">squatting<\/a> a bit deeper, but with 15kg of weight. She\u2019s now working towards full-depth squats using the bar. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Asked in the follow-up video whether she had surprised herself after eight weeks of training, Rhoda says: \u2018I surprise myself most times we train. The thing is, we train together, and when I see what he [her husband Michael] is doing, I think to myself, how am I going to do that when it comes to my turn? While she continues to notice small improvements every day, Rhoda says her aim is still to be able to hold her upper back straight for longer periods.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">\u2018When I first shared videos of them lifting weights right at the start, I had a couple of people say they thought my mum looked frail and they were asking should she really be doing this,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c95u1Lf5nrw\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c95u1Lf5nrw\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"says Johnston\" data-node-id=\"37.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says Johnston<\/a>. \u2018And I would say this is proof that you can overcome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64651797\/coffee-prevents-frailty-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64651797\/coffee-prevents-frailty-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"frailty\" data-node-id=\"37.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">frailty<\/a> and see big improvements in just a short period of time, at any age.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"38\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Indeed, provided you take the correct safety measures and train with expert guidance, it\u2019s generally never too late to benefit from weight training. Age-related muscle mass loss \u2013 otherwise known as sarcopenia \u2013 is common and can lead to impaired mobility, falls and general frailty.
