Mercedes-AMG showcased a C590 prototype around the Las Vegas Formula 1 race.
\nThe prototype shed some camouflage, giving us the best look yet at next year’s production model.
\nThe prototype was driven around Las Vegas by Mercedes F1 driver George Russell, who called it “the most insane car” he had ever experienced.<\/p>\n

Mercedes-AMG hopes to dominate the sporty four-door segment with an upcoming bespoke model, the first in AMG\u2019s history. The Porsche Taycan<\/a> rival has now started shedding camouflage, revealing its production body and giving us our best look at the car ahead of its official reveal sometime in 2026.<\/p>\n

It’s one of our best looks yet at the all-electric grand tourer, expected to be called the next AMG GT.\u00a0The prototype was driven through the streets of Las Vegas while the city hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix. George Russell, who took over after Lewis Hamilton\u2019s departure to become the lead for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, was behind the wheel. He called the C590 \u201cone of the most insane cars\u201d he had ever driven.<\/p>\n

With less camouflage than ever, we can get a very good idea of what next year\u2019s finished production car will look like. There doesn\u2019t appear to be any significant padding under the camo, although there is still some under the hood and around the grille in the front, while the rear is still sporting placeholder taillights.<\/p>\n

The car seems to have evolved since I was a passenger in a prototype<\/a> earlier this year, when I experienced its pretend V8 engine complete with gear shifts. That was one of the most unique experiences I\u2019ve ever had in a car, and I\u2019m pretty sure the faux eight-cylinder was part of the reason why Russell thought this prototype was a bit nuts.<\/p>\n

The other reason is likely how quick it is, thanks to its three-motor configuration that gives it all-wheel drive and a combined output of 1,341 horsepower or more, at least in concept form. That\u2019s if Mercedes-AMG likely won\u2019t keep the output identical to the study\u2019s, but it shouldn\u2019t be hard to give it over 1,000 hp from its trio of axial flux motors<\/a>. It needs that kind of power if it has any chance of competing against the Taycan or its Chinese rival, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This fastback will be the first vehicle built on the new AMG.EA platform, which will underpin a crossover equivalent of this car next. That model will offer the same powertrain but in a taller package<\/a> that AMG hopes will attract crossover and SUV fans to the brand and make them pick it over something like the upcoming BMW iX3 M or the new Porsche Cayenne electric<\/a>.<\/p>\n
