{"id":309254,"date":"2025-11-26T05:25:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T05:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/309254\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T05:25:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T05:25:08","slug":"all-male-lineup-take-top-slots-at-abc-sydney-after-chris-baths-shock-departure-australian-broadcasting-corporation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/309254\/","title":{"rendered":"All-male lineup take top slots at ABC Sydney after Chris Bath\u2019s shock departure | Australian Broadcasting Corporation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">ABC radio\u2019s chief, Ben Latimer, says \u201cthere is always more to do\u201d on diversity after Chris Bath was replaced with a male presenter on ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/sydney\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney<\/a>, leaving the station with an all-male lineup from Breakfast through to Drive in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bath, who announced her resignation after only one year on Monday, will be replaced by Thomas Oriti in the key Drive slot, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2024\/nov\/30\/laughter-and-tears-as-fans-farewell-abc-radio-host-richard-glover-after-28-years-on-air\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vacated by the veteran broadcaster Richard Glover<\/a> after 26 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A popular television personality, Bath was a big hire for the ABC, which needed a well-known presenter to replace Glover. Her short tenure has surprised the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Bath announced her departure from the station on Monday. Photograph: ABC<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Announcing her departure on Monday, Bath said she was stepping down from Drive \u201cto pursue some passion projects and different opportunities away from the news cycle that have been beckoning for years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Guardian Australia understands Bath had also raised concerns about the production support she was given for three hours of live radio. Bath declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Internally, staff are shocked at the dearth of female presenters on the key station, in particular in the wake of the angry reaction last year from listeners and staff when Sarah Macdonald was dumped from Mornings and replaced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2025\/jan\/14\/hamish-macdonald-new-host-abc-sydney-mornings-radio-program\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hamish Macdonald<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The flagship Sydney local radio roster is now made up of Craig Reucassel on Breakfast, Macdonald on Mornings, James O\u2019Loughlin and James Valentine on Afternoons and Oriti on Drive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2024\/mar\/21\/abc-broadcaster-james-valentine-hopeful-and-terrified-after-oesophageal-cancer-diagnosis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Valentine has been on sick leave<\/a> since June and Kathryn Robinson has been filling in one day a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Latimer, who was elevated to the executive when he was made director of audio last year, told Guardian Australia women \u201ccontinue to play a central and high-profile role across the ABC\u2019s audio services\u201d and he listed women who presented on the other networks, including the Radio National presenters Sally Sara on RN Breakfast and Sabra Lane on AM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt the same time, we recognise there is always more to do,\u201d he said. \u201cOur aspiration is continual improvement, so our presenters, stories and line-ups reflect the full diversity of the Australian communities we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Latimer said Bath had \u201cmade a personal decision about the demands of daily radio and the balance she wanted in her life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe fully support her choice, and we\u2019re delighted she\u2019s continuing as part of the 702 team on Sundays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The journalist and academic Dr Helen Vatsikopoulos, a professional fellow at the University of Technology Sydney, said she was shocked by the all-male lineup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe ABC, while it continues to pursue its various diversity objectives, has completely forgotten about half the population,\u201d Vatsikopoulos said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWell, here was a spot to bring back the popular and much-loved Sarah Macdonald \u2026 or dare I say Antoinette Lattouf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is yet another own goal for the ABC. Some deep strategic thinking is required in ABC radio management. There are no dedicated panel operators and little technical support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former 7pm ABC News presenter Juanita Phillips has posted on social media that the ABC has an \u201centrenched culture\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe disappearance of smart, capable women over 50 from ABC screens and airwaves has been happening for many years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI tried to motivate management to take real action on that three years ago (before I disappeared myself) but it\u2019s an entrenched culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/new-south-wales\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New South Wales<\/a> Greens upper house MP Cate Faehrmann said on social media that the ABC \u201ccannot be serious\u201d about replacing Bath with a man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is not 1982,\u201d she said on Threads. \u201cThis is not one of the blokey shock jock commercial stations that we perhaps expect this type of programming from.
