{"id":309294,"date":"2025-11-26T05:45:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T05:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/309294\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T05:45:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T05:45:14","slug":"what-are-medicare-mental-health-centres-and-what-do-they-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/309294\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Medicare Mental Health Centres, and what do they offer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Loading<\/p>\n<p>ACEM Queensland branch chair Dr Shantha Raghwan said people often presented to emergency departments in crisis as result of not having access to necessary support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood mental health care means people get the right help at the right time and for long enough to support real recovery,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs emergency physicians, we see the consequences when that does not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raghwan said a well-rounded mental healthcare system was one where care was available before people reached \u201cbreaking point\u201d, a sentiment reflected by other advocates.<\/p>\n<p>What are MMHCs, and what should visitors expect?<\/p>\n<p>Inner North Medicare Mental Health Centre manager Lauren Bidstrup said MMHCs were for anyone experiencing distress or mental health concerns, including family members and carers.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not for people experiencing a mental health emergency or worried about the safety of themselves or others. Credit: Courtney Kruk<\/p>\n<p>After entering a centre, a peer worker will talk through what support you need and plan the next steps.<\/p>\n<p>While psychologists are available to provide up to three months of support, Bidstrup said an initial visit was unlikely to lead straight into a session with a clinical worker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It\u2019s an initial conversation] to make sure that we\u2019re the right service for that person,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are, [we\u2019ll likely book] an appointment for a later time to come back in and sit down with one of our peer workers or psychologists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MMHCs are really designed to fill a temporary service gap, providing short to medium assistance, and connecting people with long-term supports such as housing, NDIS or Centrelink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe use a variety of different therapeutic modalities \u2026 and we have a team of skilled mental health practitioners who can offer clinical and non-clinical supports,\u201d Bidstrup said.<\/p>\n<p>Other perspectives<\/p>\n<p>Raghwan said ACEM was generally supportive of the centres\u2019 potential and efforts to expand access to affordable mental health care, but noted it was too soon to say whether they were reducing the number of people reaching crisis point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ACEM Queensland chair Dr Shantha Raghwan said emergency physicians see the consequences of people who haven\u2019t been able to access timely or ongoing mental health support.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0ed3a4eda28c54c406451a72c0819a19b443adfd98f8f11aefd1970369f49d71.jpeg\" height=\"390\" width=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ACEM Queensland chair Dr Shantha Raghwan said emergency physicians see the consequences of people who haven\u2019t been able to access timely or ongoing mental health support.Credit: ACEM<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentres could play an important role, but their impact depends on sustained investment and growing the mental health workforce,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Loading<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are not a substitute for acute and complex mental healthcare, and it is essential that they are integrated with and connected to the rest of the mental healthcare system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mental Health Lived Experience Peak Queensland chief executive Simon Katterl agreed with their potential but said centres should be viewed in the context of broader efforts to strengthen mental health services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key role these centres have is to refer to other services and supports.
