It wasn\u2019t.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiaokwcc002h3b6npjgscxz4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just moments earlier, the 28-year-old had been marveling at the sweep of a bald eagle overhead as she traveled toward Cherokee along a highway skirting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/wlos.com\/news\/local\/north-carolina-driver-woman-melissa-schlarb-us74-swain-county-wnc-bizarre-bald-eagle-drops-cat-crashed-windshield-freak-accident-viral-story-shattered-highway-incidenta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNN affiliate WLOS<\/a> reported. The majestic bird was an unexpected sight \u2014 and then, suddenly, a troubling one.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmianmagv000m3b6ngs8rxnmd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m not used to seeing them there, and I was like \u2018Wow, that\u2019s amazing,\u2019\u201d Schlarb told <a href=\"https:\/\/wlos.com\/news\/local\/north-carolina-driver-woman-melissa-schlarb-us74-swain-county-wnc-bizarre-bald-eagle-drops-cat-crashed-windshield-freak-accident-viral-story-shattered-highway-incidenta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WLOS<\/a>. \u201cI realized it had something with it. Once I realized it was a cat that it had, it barely had a hold on it, it dropped it right on my windshield. It sounded like a bomb went off.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmianmrlt000p3b6nmqdyrzlg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The cat was already dead by the time it ended up in her car, she said. Whether the massive bird released the animal from its talons deliberately or simply lost its grip is unclear, but the impact was catastrophic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmianx08o00123b6n9w2ica7t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI could see the cat in my passenger seat. I have guts all over me, there\u2019s glass everywhere,\u201d Schlarb said. A driver who had been traveling behind her pulled over immediately, telling her he watched the entire surreal sequence unfold and helping guide her off US Highway 74.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmianu2g6000z3b6n5kuy0oix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shaken and covered in blood, Schlarb called 911 and delivered a report that sounded like it came from a disaster movie.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiaoffdu001m3b6nhe5v4hnc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield,\u201d the incredulous driver said on the recorded 911 call. \u201cIt absolutely shattered my windshield.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiaofig1001q3b6npjx5rlha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The dispatcher, impressively calm in the face of chaos, let out a laugh.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiaoeql5001j3b6nbj967o2b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOK. I do believe you, honestly,\u201d the dispatcher said in a recording <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bald-eagle-cat-windshield-north-carolina-c3fdb9978ffe5ca347f2008d660adc07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">obtained by The Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cOh my goodness. Let\u2019s see. I\u2019ve heard crazier.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiabjdqx000c3b6n2v5lzctz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kendrick Weeks, Western Wildlife Diversity Program supervisor for the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, told the AP the cat may have been roadkill scavenged by the eagle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiabjdqx000d3b6ntlatzdtq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut they can take animals the size of a cat,\u201d Weeks said. \u201cIt is much harder for them to take a live cat than a dead cat. They usually don\u2019t prey on something they don\u2019t find palatable. And, scavenging is a common behavior in bald eagles.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiap5ulb002t3b6n7oiexm0x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Raptors such as eagles can lose or release their prey for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the bird simply doesn\u2019t have a secure hold, and other times the prey is struggling so violently, the raptor lets go to avoid being injured, according to Weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiap7hz0002x3b6nh4vji3gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prey may also slip away if another bird harasses the raptor mid-flight or if the load becomes too heavy to carry any farther.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiap5ulb002u3b6nobxd21zp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncwildlife.gov\/species\/bald-eagle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bald eagles<\/a> are listed as a threatened species and are native to North Carolina and much of the continent, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncwildlife.gov\/species\/bald-eagle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiapbvh500333b6no39q05fk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their population has been steadily rebounding in the state, with more than 200 nesting pairs now living there, according to Weeks. The birds typically weigh between roughly 6 1\/2 to 13 1\/2 pounds and can span 6 to 7 feet from wingtip to wingtip, Weeks told the AP.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiap5txg002r3b6ntr6g648r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though still rattled, Schlarb says she\u2019s thankful the surreal encounter caused no injuries, apart from the poor cat\u2019s demise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmiapj3dz003a3b6ni5hsxnkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI just thank God that it wasn\u2019t a different scenario,\u201d she said. \u201cEven a shift a little bit more in my direction, that could have landed in my face. It could have been a completely different story.
