Croall said.

She pointed out that while the 2025 Fringe sold 1,066,515 tickets, a 2.5 per cent increase on 2024, its actual ticket inventory was close to 2 million available seats.

“So there’s room to grow because we want more and more shows to be selling out, but it’s not about growing the number of shows,” Croall said.

With a finite audience capacity in Adelaide — despite locals’ huge appetite for the Fringe — the team has been working to raise its profile interstate and overseas.

Croall said tourist numbers had increased from about 10,000 when she first started to nearly 60,000, and they were staying longer.

“Our profile overseas and interstate has exploded in the last decade, no doubt about it,” she said.

“The artists are more aware of who we are, but also the interstate and overseas audiences know who we are.”

Challenges for her successor

It remains an open-access festival, meaning anyone can put on a show — the very definition of a fringe festival — and the cost of seeing a show remains, on average, less than $40.

Dwindling sales at theatres

When the Adelaide Fringe is over, filling seats isn’t as easy for the state’s independent arts industry.

This will be one of the challenges for Croall’s successor because, while Fringe staff work to keep it affordable, the cost of putting on a show in Australia has skyrocketed since COVID-19 lockdowns.

“I think it was starting to increase 10 years ago, but in the last few years it’s grown exponentially,” Croall said.

She said expenses had gone up by at least 40 per cent in four years.

“That is why we are always trying to find donations to help artists put on shows, and why we’re always trying to raise money with the government and councils and so on,” Croall said.

“The audience won’t keep coming if the ticket price had to go up to cover all costs … so that’s a very difficult equation.”

Heather Croall launches the Adelaide Fringe program in 2024.
