The 31-year-old recently swapped the jersey of Movistar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idlprocycling.com\/cycling\/a-new-chance-for-fernando-gaviria-colombian-sprinter-seeks-revival-at-caja-rural\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for Caja Rural<\/a>, and in October <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idlprocycling.com\/cycling\/quinn-simmons-gaviria-hindley-and-derek-gee-west-seize-weeks-without-a-bike-to-say-yes\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">he also tied the knot<\/a>. But Tuesday brought shocking news from Monaco, where Gaviria was arrested in a car with a bizarrely high blood alcohol level.<\/p>\n<p>We of course prefer to remember Gaviria as the man who, in 2017 riding for Quick-Step, claimed four Giro d\u2019Italia stages and the points jersey. In 2018 he struck in the Tour de France \u2014 even wearing the yellow jersey for a while. His palmar\u00e8s also includes victories in Poland, Tirreno-Adriatico, the UAE Tour and the Tour of Britain. Most of his wins came during his time with \u201cThe Wolfpack\u201d and UAE.<\/p>\n<p>But things took a dark turn. According to reporting by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicematin.com\/societe\/justice\/un-cycliste-professionnel-juge-pour-alcool-au-volant-a-monaco-10658112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nice Matin<\/a>, a \u201cprofessional cyclist\u201d was convicted on Tuesday for driving under the influence in Monaco. The incident happened back in October, but the court only ruled now. It was allegedly Gaviria \u2014 who was caught with a staggering blood alcohol level of 2.40 grams per liter. That is five times above the legal limit.<\/p>\n<p>Continue reading below the photo<\/p>\n<p>Gaviria entered court alone, without lawyer<\/p>\n<p>Gaviria, who was stopped by police in broad daylight after displaying dangerous driving behaviour, was, according to the judge, \u201cone or two drinks away from a coma\u201d. He was ordered to sleep off his intoxication until midnight that day, before he was deemed fit to be held accountable and could be taken into custody. \u201cI had slept a few hours and thought I was okay to drive, but that wasn\u2019t the case. It was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court imposed a two-month suspended prison sentence, banned him from driving in Monaco for two years, fined him \u20ac5,000, and issued three smaller additional penalties. Gaviria cited \u201cwork-related stress\u201d and \u201cfamily problems\u201d as the reasons behind his alcohol consumption.
