The Players\u2019 Fund is a South African non-profit organization that serves as the official safety net for rugby players who sustain catastrophic, life-changing head, neck, or spinal injuries while playing the game.<\/p>\n
A delighted Annie Dobson, CEO of the Players\u2019 Fund, said they are deeply touched by the generosity of the referee societies\u2019 support for the Fund.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thrilled at the unwavering support and generosity of our refs, following the SARRA Council meeting held earlier this month,\u201d said Dobson.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 15 referee societies unanimously committed to donating R5,000 each to the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players\u2019 Fund \u2013 a collective contribution of R75,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis generous decision confirms the commitment to the Fund\u2019s vital role in supporting catastrophically injured players and highlighted the powerful part referees play, both in preventing serious injuries and in responding when they occur.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis contribution is a meaningful demonstration of referees standing shoulder to shoulder with their rugby community,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The Players\u2019 Fund, often called \u201cRugby’s Caring Hands,\u201d provides comprehensive, long-term support to both players and their families to help them adapt to a \u201cnew normal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Founded in 1980 after the tragic death of Western Province player Chris Burger, and later incorporating the legacy of schoolboy player Petro Jackson, the Fund ensures that injured players are never forgotten by the rugby community, supporting them indefinitely.<\/p>\n
