he told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Bamboo, he added, is far harder to ignite than many assume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Bamboo doesn&#8217;t burn as easily as wood; it&#8217;s very hard to ignite, so probably some other materials triggered the blaze,&#8221; Professor Crolla added.<\/p>\n<p>Why does Hong Kong still use bamboo scaffolding?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For decades in the skyscraper-strewn former British colony, bamboo has been the material of choice for scaffolding \u2014 cheap, abundant and flexible \u2014 bound together with nylon cords.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-27\/hong-kong-apartments-kills-dozens-hundreds-missing\/106057928\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106057928\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow the latest updates on the Hong Kong fire in our live blog<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The craft originated on mainland China, where bamboo has been a cornerstone of architecture since ancient times, even reputedly used for scaffolding and tools in the building of the Great Wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now, however, it has largely been phased out there for sturdier metal scaffolding and clamps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Hong Kong, despite its modernity, still has about 2,500 registered bamboo scaffolding masters plying their trade, according to official figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The number of metal scaffolders is about triple that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Small teams of scaffolders scrambling up steep gleaming facades to sheathe a building in a matter of weeks is an iconic sight in the global financial hub.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two men hang on to bamboo scaffolding while installing it.
