Wildlife groups have welcomed an impending speed limit reduction on a local road near wetlands.<\/p>\n

The speed limit on Hope Road in Bibra Lake will be reduced from 70km\/h to 60km\/h in late January after pleas from the City of Cockburn, local residents and the tenant organisations of the nearby Wetlands Precinct, including WA Wildlife and The Wetlands Centre.<\/p>\n

Traffic-calming and road safety treatments will also be installed by the city in Bibra Lake as part of the Urban Road Safety Improvements Project, supported through Main Roads WA\u2019s Low Cost Urban Road Safety Program.<\/p>\n

This includes the installation of an LED speed radar on Hope Road.<\/p>\n

Mayor Logan Howlett said these improvements would strengthen safety across the precinct and help protect the unique ecological values of Bibra Lake.<\/p>\n

\u201cHope Road is a key access point to the lake, shared paths, parks, playgrounds and important community facilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also home to precious native species, including the vulnerable snake-necked turtles we are working hard to protect.<\/p>\n

\u201cReducing the speed limit will make this area safer for families, cyclists, visitors and wildlife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to especially acknowledge Felicity Bairstow from the Wetlands Conservation Society, who has been advocating for this change over many years and through many different volunteer roles.\u201d<\/p>\n

WA Wildlife CEO Dean Huxley said the decision reflected a shared commitment to protecting local wildlife and community safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery year we see turtles and other native species injured or killed on Hope Road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis speed reduction will make a real difference for the wildlife that call Bibra Lake\/North Lake home and for the families who visit this beautiful area.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wetlands Centre chair Treena Burgess said it was a fantastic outcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cLowering the speed limit recognises the importance of protecting our native fauna crossing from one wetland to the other in this unique place,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery measure that helps safeguard our native species and make our roads safer for everyone is a positive step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new limit is part of a swathe of changes to speed limits coming over the next few months.<\/p>\n

In December, the speed limits on Jandakot Road between Fraser Road and prior to Warton Road, and on Warton Road between Armadale Road and Nicholson Road, will go from 80km\/h to 70km\/h.<\/p>\n

The existing 50km\/h speed limit on all roads bound by Poletti Road, North Lake Road and Midgegooroo Avenue, and on all roads bound by Berrigan Drive, Lakes Way and the Kwinana Freeway, will be reduced to 40km\/h.<\/p>\n

In January, the 60km\/h speed limit on Mayor Road between Atwell Close and Rockingham Road will go down to 50km\/h, and the existing 70km\/h speed limit on Hope Road between Progress Drive and Bibra Lake Drive will become 60km\/h.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Wildlife groups have welcomed an impending speed limit reduction on a local road near wetlands.
