{"id":313687,"date":"2025-11-28T05:33:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T05:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/313687\/"},"modified":"2025-11-28T05:33:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T05:33:10","slug":"the-bureau-of-meteorology-has-declared-la-nina-is-under-way-off-australia-just-days-ahead-of-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/313687\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bureau of Meteorology has declared La Ni\u00f1a is under way off Australia just days ahead of summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bureau of Meteorology has declared that La Ni\u00f1a is under way off Australia just days ahead of summer, but a counteracting weather event means it will not be as impactful as other La Ni\u00f1as.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions consistent with the weather phenomenon have been observed in the Pacific Ocean since early October, with meteorologists today saying all signs point to La Ni\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are clear signs the tropical Pacific ocean and atmosphere are now coupled, meaning they are acting to reinforce and sustain the La Ni\u00f1a pattern,&#8221; the Bureau of Meteorology said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/fd69dc70-42c4-443c-874e-2e93212677df.jpeg\"   alt=\"The Bureau of Meteorology has declared that La Ni&#xF1;a is currently underway off Australia just days ahead of summer. &#xFEFF;\"\/>The Bureau of Meteorology has declared that La Ni\u00f1a is currently underway off Australia just days ahead of summer. \ufeff (Getty Images\/iStockphoto)<\/p>\n<p>\ufeff&#8221;Atmospheric indicators, such as trade winds, pressure and cloud patterns over the equatorial central Pacific, also show consistent signs of La Ni\u00f1a.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The last \ufeffLa Ni\u00f1a was in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology&#8217;s La Ni\u00f1a declarations are mostly retrospective, meaning conditions need to be present in the ocean and atmosphere for some time before it can be determined that the event is occurring.<\/p>\n<p>The La Ni\u00f1a declaration comes after \ufeffwarmer-than-average waters were observed across much of the Australian region, with sea surface temperatures the second warmest on record for October.<\/p>\n<p>Meteorologists forecast that the unusually warm conditions \ufeffare likely to continue from December through to February, particularly for the east coast. \ufeff<\/p>\n<p>This could worsen the severity of rainfall, storms and cyclones.<\/p>\n<p>But this year&#8217;s La Ni\u00f1a appears to be quite weak and forecast to be short-lived, with levels returning to neutral by early 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/310e6921-e10d-48b0-b805-a7419809f993.png\"   alt=\"Bureau of Meteorology's long-range summer weather forecast.\"\/>Bureau of Meteorology&#8217;s long-range summer weather forecast. (Bureau of Meteorology)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our rainfall forecast currently suggests there will be little overall influence from this event,&#8221; the Bureau of Meteorology said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology&#8217;s latest long-range outlooks \ufeffpredict near or below average rainfall and abnormally warm days for much of the country this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Weatherzone said one of the reasons why \ufeffLa Ni\u00f1a is not having too much of an influence on the weather is because of the ongoing negative southern annular mode in the Southern Hemisphere, which has been in place since early October.<\/p>\n<p>The southern annular mode is a shift in strong westerly winds over Australia, which can counteract the influence of \ufeffLa Ni\u00f1a&#8217;s easterly winds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current negative southern annular mode phase has indeed been hindering La Nina&#8217;s influence on Australian weather in recent months, and this influence may linger into early summer,&#8221; Weatherzone said. \ufeff<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/66360dbf-cbe7-470b-8678-154caa537055.png\"   alt=\"\"\/>La Ni\u00f1a is one of the phases of a Pacific Ocean phenomenon called the El Ni\u00f1o\u2013Southern Oscillation.
