These corner states are protected by the deep laws of topology \u2013 a kind of quantum armour against errors and noise.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This achievement marks the first experimental realisation of what scientists call non-equilibrium higher-order topological phases. These offer a new way to store quantum information that does not easily break down, which has been a major challenge for quantum computers.<\/p>\n<p>Pan, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was once called the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3223364\/chinese-quantum-computer-180-million-times-faster-ai-related-tasks-says-team-led-physicist-pan?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cfather of quantum\u201d<\/a> by the journal Nature.
