Perth<\/a>-based rapper<\/a> Drapht and British comedian Jimmy Carr have almost nothing in common, yet an uncanny link between the WA<\/a> Day Festival headliner\u2019s biggest song and the stand-up\u2019s catchy name has resulted in a bizarre audience crossover for the pair.<\/p>\n

The Doubleview resident\u2019s 2008 track Jimmy Recard posits that the rhythm and flow in one\u2019s given name may have the power to unlock doors in their career, boost their social life, or even offer sway with the ladies.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, not only does Jimmy Carr have a name that resembles the rapper\u2019s hit, as well as boasting a successful comedy career, but he\u2019s been using Drapht\u2019s tune as his walk out song on stage for at least two and a half years.<\/p>\n

So how did it all start?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was zero collaboration,\u201d Drapht told PerthNow in jest.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just had this random DM on Instagram one day, and it was from a tour manager that was tour managing Jimmy Carr at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He recalled the rep telling him: \u201cWe want to get you to the Perth show. We\u2019d love you to play the song, and Jimmy really wants to meet you\u201d.<\/p>\n

Drapht \u2014 who also goes by Paul Reid \u2014 said he \u201cwasn\u2019t a massive Jimmy Carr fan at that time\u201d, this being early 2023, but did some research and quickly discovered how famous the comic was.<\/p>\n

Unable to meet in Perth due to a scheduling conflict, the stars aligned in Townsville when both had performances booked in the Queensland town several weeks later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to the show there and had this really awkward exchange with Jimmy Carr, just him and I in a green room,\u201d the West Aussie recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018I don\u2019t need to be in the green room with Jimmy car\u2019. I had zero things to talk to him about, and he was so lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

A clip recently surfaced of Carr being asked by an audience member if he had commissioned the hype track, assuming the lyrics \u201cJ-R, Jimmy Recard\u201d were in fact a direct reference to the Brit\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

But Carr was quick to clarify.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s called Jimmy Recard \u2014 it\u2019s an Australian song. It sounds a bit like my name, but it\u2019s not my name,\u201d he explained, to his crowd\u2019s amusement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have the song made, I just f***** straight lifted it from this guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comic then recalled how an Aussie came up to him after a show once and informed him of the song\u2019s title and lyrics, which immediately aroused the TV personality\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n

Drapht said upon being introduced to the tune, Carr \u201cjust fell in love with it, and now he\u2019s been using it for the last two years as his walk on and walk off song\u201d.<\/p>\n

The sound likeness between \u201cJimmy Recard\u201d and \u201cJimmy Carr\u201d has resulted in both performers seeing an uptick in their respective audiences.<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s likely the Perth local is reaping more of the rewards, even if he\u2019s not been paid a cent by the global star for the song\u2019s repeat on-stage use.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get these random tweets from time to time, \u2018Hey, I Shazammed your song at a Jimmy Car show in Edinburgh or Canada\u2019. So he\u2019s kind of just flying the flag, and I\u2019m just not having to do any of the legwork,\u201d the rapper teased.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s like, \u2018Are you getting paid for it? Did he pay for it?\u2019 But no, he didn\u2019t pay me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe opportunity in itself for him to be able to play that, because he tours more than any comedian in the world at the moment, so he\u2019s constantly on tour, and for him to be playing my song in sold out arenas around the world, is just the gift that just keeps on giving. It\u2019s incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drapht has released seven albums and claimed two ARIA Awards, with hits Rapunzel and Sing It also achieving chart success in Australia.<\/p>\n

The 43-year-old provided an insight into his songwriting mindset early in his career, suggesting the idea behind Jimmy Recard was born out of his early partying days and a perception that mates in his orbit appeared cooler than him due largely to the names they had been bestowed at birth.<\/p>\n

Because as fans know, Drapht\u2019s mother named him Paul \u2014 \u201cPlain old boring old Paul\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just thought Paul was just like, a really boring name. I had other friends like Xavier, and a few other friends that had really quirky names, and I was like, \u2018Oh, man, these guys just look like they\u2019re killing it from afar\u2019. Like, really good looking like alpha male guys.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m just like, named after Paul, the Apostle from the Bible. And I just thought that was pretty lame.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, in the years since, the rapper said he\u2019s made peace with his Christian name and does not resent it.<\/p>\n

Nor does he resent his mum for her lack of imagination 43 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, many years after, I kind of don\u2019t even think about it, to be honest, and if it gave me that song, then there\u2019s the gift within itself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
