{"id":316202,"date":"2025-11-29T09:46:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T09:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/316202\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T09:46:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T09:46:41","slug":"weve-finally-got-nasas-mars-images-of-comet-3i-atlas-and-theyre-some-of-the-closest-views-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/316202\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ve finally got NASA&#8217;s Mars images of comet 3I\/ATLAS, and they&#8217;re some of the closest views yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In October 2025, three of NASA&#8217;s Mars spacecraft captured images of comet 3I\/ATLAS, showing what this mysterious interstellar object looks like from the surface of another world.<\/p>\n<p>The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured a close-up view of 3I\/ATLAS, while the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) spacecraft imaged the comet in ultraviolet light.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/interstellar-rocks-deep-space.jpg\" alt=\"Interstellar rocks from deep space. Credit: NASA\/Lowell Observatory\/Qicheng Zhang; NASA\/Southwest Research Institute<br \/>\nA comet from another star system<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the vast majority of comets that we see from Earth, 3I\/ATLAS didn&#8217;t form within our Solar System.<\/p>\n<p>It formed elsewhere in the Galaxy, and is merely passing through our Solar System.<\/p>\n<p>Once it has left our Solar System, it will be gone from our view forever.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s here, scientists have been pointing our most powerful telescopes at it, in order to find out more about its shape, size, chemical composition and trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s fleet of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/comet-3i-atlas-nasa-solar-spacecraft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar missions were able to capture images of 3I\/ATLAS<\/a> while it was close to the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>And the European Space Agency&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/comet-3i-atlas-mars-observations-planetary-defence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trace Gas Orbiter at Mars was able to image the interstellar comet<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<p>Now NASA has released new images of 3I\/ATLAS captured by its own spacecraft at Mars. Credit: NASA\/Goddard\/LASP\/CU Boulder<\/p>\n<p>MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) captured images of 3I\/ATLAS over a period of 10 days starting 27 September 2025, using its Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) camera.<\/p>\n<p>The IUVS instrument caught multiple views of the comet in different wavelengths, and gave scientists high-resolution ultraviolet images that enabled the identification of hydrogen at the comet.<\/p>\n<p>You can find out more about what the spacecraft found in our report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/news\/comet-3i-atlas-nasa-maven-hydrogen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MAVEN&#8217;s view of 3I\/ATLAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/comet-3i-atlas-nasa-mro.jpg\" alt=\"Image of comet 3I\/ATLAS captured by NASA\u2019s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, 2 October 2025. Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/University of Arizona<\/p>\n<p>On 2 October 2025, NASA&#8217;s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured views of 3I\/ATLAS from a distance of 30 million kilometres (19 million miles), which is one of the closest views we&#8217;re likely to get of the comet.<\/p>\n<p>MRO used its HiRISE\u00a0(the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera to view the comet, which was something of a departure from the norm for the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>HiRISE was designed to observe the Martian surface, but on this occasion the camera was pointed upwards to observe 3I\/ATLAS.<\/p>\n<p>The HiRISE image shows the comet&#8217;s fuzzy coma, which is the cloud of dust and gas released as the frozen interstellar object gets closer to the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>Mission scientists say the HiRISE imagery could help them estimate the size of the comet\u2019s nucleus and pinpoint the size and colour of particles within the coma.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nasa-mro-siding-spring.jpg\" alt=\"NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter previously captured an image of comet C\/2013 A1 Siding Spring as it flew by Mars on 19 October 2014. Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/University of Arizona<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Observations of interstellar objects are still rare enough that we learn something new on every occasion,&#8221; says Shane Byrne, HiRISE principal investigator at the University of Arizona in Tucson.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re fortunate that 3I\/ATLAS passed this close to Mars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of MRO\u2019s biggest contributions to NASA\u2019s work on Mars has been watching surface phenomena that only HiRISE can see,&#8221; says MRO\u2019s project scientist Leslie Tamppari of NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is one of those occasions where we get to study a passing space object as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perseverance<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/e2-m2020-3iatlas-clean.gif\" alt=\"Image of comet 3I\/ATLAS captured by the Mastcam-Z instrument on NASA\u2019s Perseverance Mars rover, 4 October 2025.
