(ABC News: Callum Flinn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Data from the Reserve Bank shows 881,800 credit and card-charge cash advances from &#8220;larger&#8221; Australian card issuers in November last year. That increased 4 per cent to 916,600 by February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Ms Shroot says Australians are increasingly turning to buy now, pay later (BNPL) services, a form of credit usually entered into at the point of sale.<\/p>\n<p>Financial hardship resources:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Generally, shoppers buy a product, take it home and pay it off in regular instalments, for example, fortnightly payments over eight weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead of paying interest, there are usually different fees for late repayments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/ndh.org.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">National Debt Helpline<\/a>, an independent service providing financial counselling to indebted Australians, has seen an increase in callers struggling with BNPL issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This year, so far, over 7 per cent more buy now, pay later issues have come through than in previous years and we still have another six weeks of reporting to go,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-10\/buy-now-pay-later-doordash-us-new-regulations-in-australia\/105347958\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">As the US reacts to &#8216;burrito now, pay later&#8217;, Australia regulates BNPL<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Consumer protections that apply to credit products such as hardship requests will now apply to BNPL providers such as Afterpay and Zip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As for traditional credit cards, data from money.com.au shows Australians put an average of $1,200 a month in discretionary spending on their credit cards \u2014 that&#8217;s $14,400 a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The financial comparison site&#8217;s spokesperson Sean Callery cautioned that not all retailers discount during this trading period, which might catch out some shoppers who may assume everything is discounted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Ultimately, retailers want to make more sales earlier in the year if they can,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can get bargains but it ultimately comes down to what dollar amount you&#8217;re spending as opposed to what you would be spending otherwise.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A young, unshaven man with neat brown hair and  brown linen shirt answers our reporter's questions.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/08073eea6a0d3843ba938a98fa497bc7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sean Callery says a pitfall of pre-Christmas sales is people spending more than they planned to, even if they are finding bargains.
