And its biggest competitors are taking notice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv400073b6nlu35fl80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re delighted by Google\u2019s success \u2014 they\u2019ve made great advances in AI and we continue to supply to Google,\u201d Nvidia<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nvidianewsroom\/status\/1993364210948936055?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> wrote<\/a> in a November 25 post on X, before adding that \u201cNVIDIA offers greater performance, versatility, and fungibility than ASICs,\u201d (the application-specific integrated circuits) like those made by Google.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv400083b6n84asaj0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCongrats to Google on Gemini 3! Looks like a great model,\u201d OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/1990828659981144462\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on X<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv400093b6nioaoxzgq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The posts came just days after mounting buzz about Google\u2019s Gemini 3 model \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/tpu?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Google-made chips<\/a> that help to power it. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Benioff\/status\/1992726929204760661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on X<\/a> that he\u2019s not going back to ChatGPT after trying Google\u2019s new model. \u201cThe leap is insane \u2014 reasoning, speed, images, video\u2026 everything is sharper and faster. It feels like the world just changed, again,\u201d he wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv4000a3b6nttvodqwf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now Meta is said to be in talks with Google about buying its Tensor chips, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/google-encroaches-nvidias-turf-new-ai-chip-push\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Information<\/a>, coming after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/expanding-our-use-of-google-cloud-tpus-and-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anthropic said<\/a> in October that it plans to significantly expand its own use of Google\u2019s technology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijci68200003b6nx4okuzwf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shares of Google were up nearly 8% last week, while Nvidia\u2019s were down a little over 2%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv4000b3b6n664iyojo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At stake is more than just bragging rights or a few sales contracts. As the tech industry claims AI will reshape the world \u2014 including investment portfolios belonging to everyone from billionaires to 401k-holding retirees \u2014 what company and what vision comes out on top could affect nearly every American.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv4000c3b6norh2bg2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At face value, Nvidia\u2019s post says the company isn\u2019t worried about Google encroaching on its territory. And for good reason \u2014 Google\u2019s chips are fundamentally different from Nvidia\u2019s offerings, meaning they aren\u2019t a match-for-match alternative.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv4000d3b6nque7ffvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that OpenAI and Nvidia felt the need to acknowledge Google at all is telling.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv4000e3b6nzh3bv4ln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey\u2019re in the lead for now, let\u2019s call it, until somebody else comes up with the next model,\u201d Angelo Zino, senior vice president and technology lead at CFRA, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahjv4000f3b6nyrssifl8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google and Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nvidia declined to comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijai0i3000l3b6na9v0qwa6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google is hardly an AI underdog. Along with ChatGPT, Gemini is one of the world\u2019s most popular AI chatbots, and Google is one of the few cloud providers large enough to be known as a \u201chyperscaler,\u201d a term for the handful of tech giants that rent out cloud-based computing resources to other companies on a large scale. Google services like Search and Translate have used AI as far back as the early 2000s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijai0i3000m3b6neyc2ujfj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even so, Google was largely caught flat-footed by OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT when it arrived in 2022. Google management reportedly issued a \u201ccode red\u201d in December 2022 following ChatGPT\u2019s seemingly overnight success, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/21\/technology\/ai-chatgpt-google-search.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>. ChatGPT now has at least 800 million weekly active users, according to its maker, OpenAI, while Google\u2019s Gemini app has 650 million monthly active users.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2024-08-13t215435z-1595946711-rc27f9aibcpp-rtrmadp-3-google-hardware.JPG\" alt=\"Attendants try the new Gemini AI model features at a Made by Google event in Mountain View, California, on August 13, 2024.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijai0i3000n3b6nfsmk9rs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Gemini 3, which debuted on November 18, now sits at the top of <a href=\"https:\/\/lmarena.ai\/leaderboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">benchmark leaderboards<\/a> for tasks like text generation, image editing, image processing and turning text into images, putting it ahead of rivals like ChatGPT, xAI\u2019s Grok and Anthropic\u2019s Claude in those categories.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijai0i3000o3b6nozc5941h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google said over one million users tried Gemini 3 in its first 24 hours through both the company\u2019s AI coding program and the tools that allow digital services to connect to other apps.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijahmns000j3b6nteg9anzn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But people tend to use different AI models for different purposes, says Ben Barringer, the global head of technology research at investment firm Quilter Cheviot. For example, models from xAI and Perplexity are ranked higher than Gemini 3 search performance in benchmark tests.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk000t3b6n8pxqc5w5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt doesn\u2019t necessarily mean (Google parent) Alphabet is going to be \u2026 the end-all when it comes to AI,\u201d said Zino. \u201cThey\u2019re just kind of another piece to this AI ecosystem that continues to get bigger.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk000v3b6nur98fel1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google began making its Tensor chips long before the recent AI boom. But Nvidia still dominates in AI chips with the company reporting 62% year-over-year sales growth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/19\/tech\/nvidia-earnings-ai-bubble-fears\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the October quarter<\/a> and profits up 65% compared to a year ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk000w3b6n7ihd3q2c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s largely because Nvidia\u2019s chips are powerful and can be used more broadly. Nvidia and its chief rival, AMD, specialize in chips known as graphics processing units, or GPUs, which can perform vast amounts of complex calculations quickly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk000x3b6nxooeil8o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google\u2019s Tensor chips are ASICs, or chips that are custom-made for specific purposes.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gettyimages-2247156740.jpg\" alt=\"Components of a Nvidia Corp. GB3000 GPU on display during Hon Hai Tech Day conference in Taipei, Taiwan, on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk000y3b6nz7u1bopx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While GPUs and Google\u2019s chips can both be used for training and running AI models, ASICs are usually designed for \u201cnarrower workloads\u201d than GPUs are designed for, Jacob Feldgoise, senior data research analyst at Georgetown\u2019s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, told CNN in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk000z3b6noye0qarl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beyond the differences in the types of chips themselves, Nvidia provides full technology packages to be used in data centers that include not just GPUs, but other critical components like networking chips.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk00103b6nw27l5tmk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It also offers a software platform that allows developers to tailor their code so that their apps can make better use of Nvidia\u2019s chips, a key selling point for hooking in long-term customers. Even Google is an Nvidia client.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk00113b6nj8za3spq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you look at the magnitude of Nvidia\u2019s offerings, nobody really can touch them,\u201d said Ted Mortonson, technology desk sector strategist at Baird.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk00123b6nj625wh1m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chips like Google\u2019s won\u2019t replace Nvidia anytime soon. But increased adoption of ASICs, combined with more competition from AMD, could suggest companies are looking to reduce their reliance on Nvidia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijaietk00133b6n8kw69ksm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Google won\u2019t be the only AI chip competitor, said Barringer of Quilter Cheviot, and it\u2019s doubtful it will achieve Nvidia\u2019s dominance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmijc9asq00013b6n6i6e8tvs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it\u2019s a part of a balance,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Google just threw another twist in the fast-changing AI race.
