Source: Katharina Fabricius\/AIMS<\/p>\n<p>Will fish be impacted?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ocean acidification has already increased by 30 per cent over preindustrial levels, making it harder for corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons, weakening the overall structure of reefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But this new international research, led by AIMS and published in the journal <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-025-08889-w\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Communications Biology;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Communications Biology<\/a> overnight, gives insight into how reefs around the world will change by 2100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Of particular concern is that there were fewer baby corals in the high-carbon environment, meaning reefs will likely be slower to recover from extreme weather events, including cyclones and bleaching.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Because reefs provide important shelter and food, a reduction of coral means marine life will decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cCoral reefs house about 1 million species of marine organisms, and they all depend on the structural complexity of corals for their home and shelter,\u201d Fabricius said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf the corals are less complex, then the organisms don\u2019t have habitat, and you\u2019re seeing a severe reduction in crabs, shrimps and fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Background: A man on the sand looking out to Ningaloo Reef.
