December is here, and with it, a new\u00a0Avatar\u00a0movie. These movies keep making that holiday money, and the upcoming\u00a0Fire & Ash<\/a>\u00a0looks to keep that going. But if for whatever reason, it underperfomed and this was the last movie in the series? James Cameron\u2019s<\/a> got a contingency plan.<\/p>\n

On a recent episode of Matt Belloni\u2019s \u201cThe Town<\/a>\u201d podcast, the filmmaker said he was \u201cabsolutely\u201d prepared to close the book on the franchise\u00a0if needed, acknowledging he\u2019s been \u201cin\u00a0Avatar\u00a0land for [30] years. If this is where it ends, cool.\u201d He\u2019s not open to completely handing things over to someone else\u2014\u201dI could produce it. I don\u2019t think there\u2019d ever be a version where there\u2019s another Avatar movie that I didn\u2019t produce closely,\u201d he mentioned\u2014but if need be, he\u2019ll tie things up with a book.<\/p>\n

Yes, really: there\u2019s apparently just\u00a0one\u00a0open story thread at the end of\u00a0Fire & Ash,\u00a0and he\u2019ll bring it to the page. But again, that\u2019s only if this new movie underperforms. Why is this on his mind? He mentioned concerns of \u201cforces\u201d like \u201csequelitis,\u201d streaming, and covid that would keep audiences away. Funnily enough, these were also concerns to be raised about\u00a0The Way of Water\u00a0in 2022, and look how that went. To his point, though, 2025\u2019s not been the best year for franchise: audiences generally bounced on M3GAN 2.0\u00a0and\u00a0Thunderbolts<\/a>,\u00a0to the point Blumhouse admitted it might\u2019ve overestimated interest<\/a> in its killer cyborg.<\/p>\n

Then again,\u00a0Wicked: For Good<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Zootopia 2\u00a0both look ready to make a killing at the box office over the next few weeks, so we\u2019ll see how\u00a0Avatar: Fire & Ash\u00a0does when it lands on December 19.<\/p>\n
