viewBox=&quot;0 0 979 301&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\"  alt=\"Supplied Real Estate Source: Canstar Consumer Pulse Report.\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1082467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Canstar Consumer Pulse Report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cI would say from the outset that there\u2019s a difference between considering it and actually going through with it, but the fact that it\u2019s on people\u2019s minds is very telling,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cOf those considering selling, 19 per cent said they\u2019re considering selling because they can\u2019t afford the higher loan repayments\u2026 and it\u2019s up 16 per cent from the year before, which is really interesting because, at least for now, we\u2019re done with rate hikes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cWe have seen three rate cuts this year and even then, some families, some households are thinking it\u2019s time to sell because they can\u2019t keep on achieving. You can\u2019t keep on scaling Everest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The pressure is most acute in Queensland, where 32 per cent of owners are mulling a sale, followed by Victoria (27 per cent), Western Australia (26 per cent), New South Wales (25 per cent) and South Australia (12 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Ms Tindall said generational stresses were particularly stark. <\/p>\n<p><img class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa size-full wp-post- wp-image-1082468\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1082468\" data-capiid=\"11a3111b77d1594f8a8b5036532b3ee3\" width=\"748\" height=\"379\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 748 379&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\"  alt=\"Supplied Real Estate Source: Canstar Consumer Pulse Report.\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1082468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Canstar Consumer Pulse Report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">For Millennials, monthly repayments on a $600,000, 30\u2011year home loan taken out before the RBA\u2019s rate cycle began in May 2022 have climbed to about $3,734 \u2013 a 50 per cent increase. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Gen Z renters report unrelenting strain, with half experiencing a rent rise in 2025 and the average increase now $62 a week, up from $53 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cOne of the most essential things in life is to have a roof over your head, so for a lot of people, that\u2019s the biggest concern these days,\u201d Ms Tindall said. <br \/>\u201cMortgage rates are significantly higher than they were three years ago\u2026.and for people who haven\u2019t refinanced or renegotiated their loans, that\u2019s (added) 50 per cent more on your biggest monthly expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">While some are pinning hopes on further RBA cuts, Ms Tindall warned this could backfire without more supply as a majority of existing owners surveyed (55 per cent) said they had no plans \u2013 or don\u2019t expect to be in a position \u2013 to invest over the next two years. <\/p>\n<p><img class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa size-full wp-post- wp-image-1082469\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1082469\" data-capiid=\"931b57d73f485563d418c6f7072c195d\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 1280 720&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\"  alt=\"SMARTdaily cover photo: RateCity's Sally Tindall\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1082469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canstar head of research Sally Tindall. Picture: Tim Hunter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">For those open to buying, the key triggers are macroeconomic: lower living costs (24 per cent) and lower property prices (24 per cent), followed by lower interest rates (20 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cI think it could well be a hindrance in the long term because if we see further rate cuts, people will be able to borrow more\u2026 that pushes up demand. And the biggest problem we\u2019re currently having with soaring prices is the imbalance between supply and demand,\u201d Ms Tindall said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cThere are so many people looking for houses in key property hotspots but there are not enough houses for sale. So interest rates can really feed that demand and then keep pushing property prices higher, which then makes it even harder for first\u2011home buyers to actually get a foothold on the property ladder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa size-full wp-post- wp-image-1082470\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1082470\" data-capiid=\"17279ad94f2bd4a9143fdb7d0143696e\" width=\"748\" height=\"379\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 748 379&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\"  alt=\"Supplied Real Estate Source: Canstar Consumer Pulse Report.\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1082470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Canstar Consumer Pulse Report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Evy Kassiotes, 26, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/real-estate\/buying\/such-a-scam-26yearold-mortified-over-how-little-shes-paid-off-her-home-loan\/news-story\/791f6cc2b9b2a318aef0eed5ab3968f8\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took to social media recently <\/a>to claim home ownership hadn\u2019t quite lived up to her financial expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cOwning a home is actually such a scam,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cI got a letter in the mail to tell us about the progression of our loan and how much we\u2019ve paid off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Ms Kassiotes then expressed her shock at learning how little of a dent she had made in her mortgage in almost two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cWhat do you mean we\u2019ve only paid off $3000 since October 2023? It is now May 2025,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cLike are you joking? Is this a joke? Picture: TikTok\/evy.kassiotes<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Finder home loans expert Richard Whitten said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realestate.com.au\/news\/skip-toys-this-xmas-give-kids-mortgage-help-instead-expert-says\/?campaignType=external&amp;campaignChannel=syndication&amp;campaignName=ncacont&amp;campaignContent=&amp;campaignSource=the_advertiser&amp;campaignPlacement=article\" title=\"www.realestate.com.au\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new data showed the costs of owning a home over the life of its loan were close to double the sticker price <\/a>\u2013 more than double in some cases \u2013 and anything people could do to reduce the term of that loan would see savings for the homeowner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cNew buyers will almost certainly underestimate the long-term costs of home ownership \u2013 it\u2019s basically impossible to fully map them out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cInterest charges on the home loan are massive.
