{"id":318456,"date":"2025-11-30T11:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T11:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/318456\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T11:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T11:23:10","slug":"a-long-time-coming-maple-leafs-explode-for-feel-good-rout-over-penguins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/318456\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A long time coming&#8217;: Maple Leafs explode for feel-good rout over Penguins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long deferred confidence.<\/p>\n<p>For the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/teams\/toronto-maple-leafs\/\" class=\"sn-team-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-team=\"toronto-maple-leafs\" data-league=\"nhl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>, 60 minutes like Saturday\u2019s has been 11 slogging games in the making.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how far one must track back to find a night (Nov. 5) in which the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/quick-shifts-time-for-maple-leafs-to-attack-plan-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reeling<\/a>\u00a0Leafs got the job done with such relative ease. When their offence clicked to the tune of five-plus goals and they sealed up victory without needing nail-biting overtime heroics.<\/p>\n<p>Postgame music blaring from the dressing room (\u201cCome On Eileen\u201d), Nick Robertson playfully mimicking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/dennis-hildeby\/70360e45-e9c9-43a3-8c03-08ec9a3b2568\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"70360e45-e9c9-43a3-8c03-08ec9a3b2568\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dennis Hildeby<\/a>\u2019s soft-spoken Swedish, and loud high-fives\u2026 ah, this is what winning sounds like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s been a long time coming, right?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/max-domi\/c140dfc0-9bf3-42b3-ac83-1b489e6be04f\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"c140dfc0-9bf3-42b3-ac83-1b489e6be04f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Max Domi<\/a> said. \u201cThis just does nothing but build a lot of confidence for our group, and we needed it. That\u2019s a good team over there, and we had everyone going tonight. So, huge win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skating in front of their most enthusiastic and voluminous road crowd all season \u2014\u00a0\u201cGo! Leafs! Go!\u201d\u00a0chants reigned supreme from the heavy splattering of blue across PPG Paints Arena \u2014 the Maple Leafs cruised to a 7-2 wire-to-wire romp over the Pittsburgh Penguins, despite being outshot 35-23.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, they may not have dominated the run of play. But they dominated on the scoreboard and in feel-good storylines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice to score a couple goals, and win with quite a big lead, which we haven\u2019t done in a long time,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/william-nylander\/c218392b-2251-497a-a7e7-9a76e8580f31\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"c218392b-2251-497a-a7e7-9a76e8580f31\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">William Nylander<\/a> said in a fashionable toque. \u201cLines were clicking and being connected. From the D to the forwards, everything was just flowing better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Red-hot Ekman-Larsson solved Penguins backup Arturs Silvos with Toronto\u2019s first puck on net, and by the time the Leafs had registered eight more his way, three more had smashed twine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Silvos, who couldn\u2019t track the play if you spotted him an AirTag and a couple hound dogs, got chased before the game was 25 minutes old, thwacked his goal stick down the tunnel, and forced Tristan Jarry to take the crease for the second time in less than 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Unless you\u2019re the Maple Leafs, who had as many redemption tales as goal celebrations:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/dakota-joshua\/c7011ea7-be7d-4d96-8a1e-b789263f4901\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"c7011ea7-be7d-4d96-8a1e-b789263f4901\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dakota Joshua<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/i-need-more-out-of-myself-leafs-dakota-joshua-responds-to-healthy-scratch\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/i-need-more-out-of-myself-leafs-dakota-joshua-responds-to-healthy-scratch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">scratched Wednesday<\/a>, flattened Matt Dumba with a tone-setting hit in open ice, scored in tight, and drew a penalty that resulted in a hard-to-come-by power-play goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my goal every night,\u201d Joshua said. \u201cTo finally have a game like that feels nice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s obviously been not ideal to this point. So, to get that result means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To Joshua\u2019s teammates, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a guy that\u2019s competing like he was, and winning every battle and drawing penalties, scoring goals \u2014 he really did it all\u201d Domi said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s great to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0Domi, scratched Saturday for the first time in his Leafs tenure, responded to his coach\u2019s challenge with two primary assists and nice flashes of top-line chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what happens when you get scratched,\u201d Nylander said. \u201cYou come back with maybe a little bit more fire. He did a great job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berube agreed: \u201cMax was a lot better tonight. Made some nice plays. But he was engaged in the game, just on some forehecks, taking the body, winning the puck battle. Just defensively, working back to our zone, breaking plays up. He was good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How difficult was it for Domi to sit one out?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot gonna answer anything about that,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s behind us now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0Nylander, a surprise scratch due to illness Saturday, got over his sickness with the quickness and added to his point total.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWilly\u2019s a gamer. They had a few ice tilts in their favour, and he stood tall for us back there,\u201d Joshua said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s grown, in a year, a lot,\u201d Berube added. \u201cGot a good future ahead of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0And captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/auston-matthews\/0408afd7-1600-4a36-8ec7-685120334ce1\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"0408afd7-1600-4a36-8ec7-685120334ce1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Auston Matthews<\/a> scored for the first time since returning from his lower-body injury.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, when a dozen skaters splash the scoresheet, and seven of them walk out with multi-point nights, the vibes are a little sunnier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of secondary scoring tonight, which is good for our team. We need that. It\u2019s not just on three guys or whatever that have been putting points up,\u201d said Berube, who also shouted out a defensive effort that saw Toronto out-block Pittsburgh 26-11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s confidence. You know, they\u2019re going to feel good about themselves \u2014 and that\u2019s good,\u201d Berube said, before adding a caveat. \u201cWe got to keep getting better, though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But being on the happy side of a blowout before flying to Florida and facing the Panthers for the first time since Game 7 should only juice morale for Tuesday\u2019s revenge match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody was clicking,\u201d Nylander said. \u201cWe just gotta build off that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Big 48 hours for Cowan, sharing his first sheet with Alex Ovechkin and hanging a dash on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/hockey\/nhl\/players\/sidney-crosby\/433de553-0f24-11e2-8525-18a905767e44\" class=\"sn-player-post-link\" target=\"_self\" data-player=\"433de553-0f24-11e2-8525-18a905767e44\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sidney Crosby<\/a> by finishing off a nifty give-and-go with Nylander.<\/p>\n<p>The rookie downplays these events as \u201cjust another game,\u201d but\u2026 c\u2019mon, really?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s pretty level-headed,\u201d says teammate Dakota Mermis. \u201cCertainly, a high-confidence kid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that\u2019s got to be cool. I mean, it always is. You sometimes try to underplay it, but it\u2019s a cool part of what we get to do. And he may be in shoes where people are looking at him one day across the ice. So, it&#8217;s exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Saturday marked the Maple Leafs\u2019 fifth back-to-back already this season \u2014 but not once have they been at a disadvantage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In each case, Toronto\u2019s opponent was also on a back-to-back. And with Friday\u2019s 5 p.m. start in Washington, the Leafs arrived in Pittsburgh before the Penguins\u2019 plane touched down from Columbus.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 How impactful has 34-year-old Ekman-Larsson been?<\/p>\n<p>Well, the most productive season of his 16-year career was 2015-16, when he erupted for 55 points in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>This season the defenceman is humming along at a 66-point clip, while injecting edge and logging heavy minutes. He\u2019s on a nine-game point streak despite being relegated to the second power-play unit.<\/p>\n<p>Ekman-Larsson left the third period with an upper-body injury that Berube hopes isn\u2019t serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he\u2019s fine to me,\u201d Nylander diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Nice David Amber sit-down feature with Joshua discussing his battle with cancer:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Robertson\u2019s boyhood idol was Crosby. And it never gets old going head-to-head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just remember the first time playing against him, I knew this guy my whole childhood, so I was like,\u00a0Yeah, I\u2019m gonna give him a cross-check,\u201d Robertson says. \u201cI went to give him one, and I kind of went back on my feet. Didn\u2019t realize how strong he was.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When the Penguins rolled through Toronto in October, Crosby gifted Robertson one of his sticks.
