{"id":319161,"date":"2025-11-30T19:41:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T19:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/319161\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T19:41:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T19:41:10","slug":"tech-companies-advised-to-label-and-watermark-ai-generated-content","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/319161\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech companies advised to label and &#8216;watermark&#8217; AI-generated content"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Artificial intelligence developers have been told they should &#8220;watermark&#8221; content so that people can clearly tell it is AI-generated, as the government seeks to address concerns the technology is being used to mislead and harm Australians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There is no legal requirement to identify content as AI-generated, which has allowed generated content to be confused as real, known as deepfaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In guidance to developers and content creators, the federal government has advised that AI content should be &#8220;clearly identifiable&#8221; by including labels that note content is AI-generated or embedding information to trace the origins of content \u2014 a process known as watermarking, which is more difficult to manipulate or remove than labels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It notes that transparency tools are particularly important where AI-generated content could be used to &#8220;adversely affect&#8221; people, and become more important the more heavily AI has been involved in creating the content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;AI is here to stay. By being transparent about when and how it is used, we can ensure the community benefits from innovation without sacrificing trust,&#8221; Industry Minister Tim Ayres said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s why the Albanese government is urging businesses to adopt this guidance. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The rapid spread of generative AI has fuelled fears that the technology could be used for fraud, misinformation, blackmail, or to exploit people by creating convincing fake content that misrepresents what a person has said or done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The eSafety Commission has warned that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-17\/deepfake-image-based-abuse-doubles-across-australia\/105905152\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105905152\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deepfake image-based abuse<\/a> is happening at least once a week in Australian schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Monday, independent senator David Pocock introduced a private senator&#8217;s bill to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-24\/victims-ai-deepfake-sue-under-david-pocock-bill\/106037560\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106037560\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prohibit digitally altered or artificially generated content depicting an individual&#8217;s face<\/a> or voice without their consent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Senator Pocock said the federal government had been too slow and had failed to comprehensively respond since beginning its <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-06-01\/ai-government-regulation-risk-classification-plan\/102417294\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102417294\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">review into responsible AI<\/a> more than two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>National AI Plan due to be released<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The new AI guidance has been given to industry ahead of the government releasing a National AI Plan, which is the culmination of several years of consulting and is <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-01-17\/government-response-to-ai-safety-sets-up-risk-based-approach\/103324906\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103324906\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to introduce &#8220;mandatory guardrails&#8221;<\/a> to protect against the worst impacts of AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The plan will also respond to ideas raised at the government&#8217;s productivity roundtable in August, where AI was a central focus of discussion on how to boost the economy and lift wages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-05\/productivity-commission-ai-laws-roundtable\/105609304\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105609304\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Productivity Commission warned against mandatory guardrails being introduced<\/a> at that roundtable, saying it could strangle a $116 billion opportunity for the economy, urging that any legislative response be paused until gaps in the law were properly identified.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-01-17\/government-response-to-ai-safety-sets-up-risk-based-approach\/103324906\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Government lays out plan for &#8216;safeguards&#8217; on risky artificial technology<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The federal government will follow the European Union and several other nations to develop a risk-based response to the rapid rise in use of artificial intelligence, setting down stricter rules for risky AI, while staying out of the way of low-risk tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But while the government seeks to strike a balance between the risks of AI and a potential economic boom, its recent measures have focused on addressing deep concerns in the community about safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Senator Ayres last week announced the government would create an AI Safety Institute, which could monitor and respond to &#8220;AI-related risks&#8221;
