(ABC News: Marcus Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, in September, Opticomm sent a letter to a subset of their customers \u2014 about 10 per cent according to Opticomm \u2014 telling them that free-to-air television would &#8220;no longer operate over our network&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The letter advised residents to either transition to streaming services using free-to-air apps or investigate whether they could install an antenna \u2014 both at their own cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We shouldn&#8217;t have been required to have any other additional costs to get our free-to-air on,&#8221; Ms Wray said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We bought into this suburb knowing we would have access to free-to-air television and then suddenly its gone.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Back of head shots of a woman with blonde hair, child with darker hair staring at blue screen tv that shows 'no signal'.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/667c5ca233b1f03c04b0bf594449fc94\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Leah Wray says not long after receiving Opticomm&#8217;s letter she came to find her television could no longer access free-to-air channels. (ABC News: Mark Leonardi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, an Opticomm spokesperson told the ABC the &#8220;equipment used to receive free-to-air television&#8221; <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opticomm.com.au\/support\/fta-faqs\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in these communities<\/a> was &#8220;reaching end-of-life&#8221; and &#8220;interfering&#8221; with other upgrades to the network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The spokesperson said Opticomm would &#8220;extend the availability of FTA television services&#8221; in the NT until July 1 2027, but did not respond to the ABC&#8217;s questions about what would happen to customers who had already lost access and those outside the NT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) confirmed that rules around statutory infrastructure providers (SIP) such as Opticomm did &#8220;not apply&#8221; to the supply of FTA television, which it said was &#8220;ultimately a commercial matter&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Regular internet issues and limited regulations<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Both Mr Thomas and Ms Wray said they had issues with Opticomm&#8217;s internet services, from dealing with regular &#8220;glitches&#8221; and loading delays to waiting four months to be connected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dozens of customers have told the ABC they too have had issues with Opticomm, including regular and lengthy outages sometimes lasting from two days to two weeks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A graphic, blue background, comment bubbles of people citing '2 week', '2 days to 10 days' outages.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/b102d1d3787ee01799f659a9b197fb1f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dozens of Opticomm customers told the ABC they have experienced significant issues with their internet. (ABC News: Randi Dahnial)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An Opticomm spokesperson said in the NT the company was &#8220;actively investing in infrastructure to improve the resilience of the network&#8221;, but did not respond to the ABC&#8217;s questions about whether it was doing the same in other parts of Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Many customers said they have complained to their internet service provider and the Telecommunications ombudsman, but with limited success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">RMIT University associate professor in engineering Mark Gregory said because the current legislation did not include &#8220;performance standards&#8221; for infrastructure providers, including Opticomm, ultimately regulators had &#8220;very limited powers&#8221; when there were &#8220;large numbers of outages&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Gregory said he believed that needed to change, and a September 2025 report from the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) showed he was not the only one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman wearing black top looking at the camera with a neutral expression on her face.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/08e1c140f42e86fcc2cb2f97b71f37b2\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Cynthia Gebert says Statutory Infrastructure Providers (ISP) should be held to service quality standards, just like internet service providers are.
