Nipping about on two wheels is quicker than walking, greener than driving, and more economical than using public transport, but not every city is created equal when it comes to cycling.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Several\u00a0factors\u00a0contribute to making a city good for cyclists.\u00a0Copenhagenize<\/a>, a company that advocates for and consults on bike-friendly urban planning,\u00a0explains that these exist in three overarching pillars, which culminate in an ecosystem of cycling. They are safe and connected infrastructure (cycle lanes, bike parking areas, traffic management), usage and reach (bike share systems, women\u2019s share of bicycle trips), and policy and support (urban planning, political commitment, and what they call the image of the bicycle).<\/p>\n The results from their 2025 research are based on a scoring of quantitative data, policy documents and evidence of recent action regarding cycling, and European cities overwhelmed the top 30 ranking, claiming a staggering 27 spots on their annual index.<\/p>\n Recommended: These are the world\u2019s 19 best cities for public transport<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Oh, and the first of these wasn\u2019t actually Copenhagen<\/a> (which claimed second place) \u2013 it was Utrecht. Scoring 71.1 overall, the Dutch city did best in the \u2018policy and support pillar\u2019 and ranked particularly well for the security of bike parking.\u00a0<\/p>\n Three Canadian cities \u2013 Montr\u00e9al<\/a> in fifteenth, Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> in twenty-ninth and Vancouver<\/a> in thirtieth \u2013 were the only non-European entries in the top 30.\u00a0<\/p>\n According to the Copenhagenize Index, French cities, namely Bordeaux, Nantes and Paris<\/a>, provide some of the \u2018calmest and most comfortable street environments\u2019 for walking and cycling thanks to their generalised speed limits.
