The 2026 edition of the Giro d’Italia Women will explore uncharted territory in more ways than one.<\/p>\n

The race is shifting from late June\/early July to May, to correspond with the ending of the men’s three-week event, and this shift alone would have made the race a momentous one. Beyond that, the route revealed by organizers on Monday adds a 12.7 km uphill time trial, opportunities for every rider, and the Colle delle Finestre to the mix, which should make next year’s race a historic edition of the Giro d’Italia Women. <\/p>\n

New dates, new race<\/p>\n

For many years, before the Tour de France Femmes was resurrected as the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the Giro was the premier stage race for women. It was the longest and most demanding stage race on the calendar, the only 10-day event in the WorldTour, and the must-attend event for those who deemed themselves “climbers.” But as other races embraced the professionaliation of the sport with live coverage and top-level treatment of athletes, eliciting the best spectacle, the Giro fell behind. In 2021, they lost their WorldTour status. It was clear that the top women’s stage race in the world needed new management. <\/p>\n
