{"id":321770,"date":"2025-12-02T02:11:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T02:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/321770\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T02:11:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T02:11:13","slug":"victorias-first-summer-japanese-encephalitis-virus-case-detected-at-horsham-in-states-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/321770\/","title":{"rendered":"Victoria&#8217;s first summer Japanese encephalitis virus case detected at Horsham in state&#8217;s west"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Japanese encephalitis Virus (JEV) has been detected for the first time this summer, in mosquitoes at Horsham, 300 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">JEV has been circulating in Australia since a major outbreak in 2022, when dozens of cases were recorded and six people died across multiple states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Sporadic cases have continued to occur in eastern Australia, including in Brisbane in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The latest detection was recorded in a monitoring trap in the Horsham local government area as part of the Victorian Arbovirus Disease Control Program, which tracks emerging disease risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Most people who contract the virus do not develop symptoms or experience only mild illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, the Department of Health said about one in 250 cases could progress to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-04-01\/queenslander-likely-died-from-japanese-encephalitis-virus\/105123982\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105123982\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">severe brain inflammation which can be fatal.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two vaccine vials on a desk\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/f2be0d0b1a7633244e26c1b843776282\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A free Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p>Free JEV vaccine<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Department of Health is urging Victorians to protect themselves from bites this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Victorian Chief Health Officer Dr Caroline McElnay said early detection was critical to warn communities where people plan to spend much of the summer outdoors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said mosquito-borne diseases such as JEV can cause serious illness but were largely preventable through use of repellent, covering up and controlling mosquitoes around the home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A free Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for eligible people due to their increased risk of exposure,&#8221;  Dr McElnay said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Anyone can be bitten by mosquitoes, but people living, working or spending time outdoors in northern Victoria \u2014 especially near rivers \u2014 may be at higher risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The best protection is to avoid mosquito bites.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The department said it was working with the Horsham Rural City Council to treat mosquito breeding sites and reduce mosquito numbers in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Loose-fits, light-colours<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Department of Health said the best way to avoid the virus was through minimising the risk of mosquito bites.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A mosquito. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ca87fa9bd835430572cc6f94cc329186\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mosquitoes belonging to the genus Culex are thought to play the most important role in Japanese encephalitis virus transmission.
