{"id":322264,"date":"2025-12-02T07:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T07:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/322264\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T07:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T07:35:09","slug":"usman-khawaja-ruled-out-of-brisbane-test-following-back-injury-travis-head-set-to-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/322264\/","title":{"rendered":"Usman Khawaja ruled out of Brisbane Test following back injury, Travis Head set to open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Usman Khawaja has been ruled out of the second Ashes Test with his back injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 38-year-old&#8217;s place in the XI had been under intense scrutiny since back spasms forced him from the field in the victorious first Test and prevented him from opening the batting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australia had been set for a selection dilemma given Travis Head&#8217;s heroic century when replacing the out-of-form Khawaja at the top in Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Khawaja completed light training duties during the team&#8217;s optional session at the Gabba on Monday, stretching his back, undertaking shuttle runs and batting in the nets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Australian batsman Usman Khawaja departs following his dismissal\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6f454d044b6ef21ee195d5a1c22fde02\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Khawaja has struggled with injury and ill form of late.\u00a0 (AAP: Dave Hunt)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But on Tuesday afternoon, Cricket Australia confirmed he had pulled up sore from his injury and would miss the Test that begins on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Khawaja will remain with the team to continue his rehabilitation,&#8221; CA said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The news means Head is likely to again partner Jake Weatherald at the top of the order, with Australia opting not to replace Khawaja in the squad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Head&#8217;s move to opener would create a vacancy in the middle order and towering all-rounder Beau Webster appears the favourite to claim it.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Webster has had an impressive first year as a Test cricketer, averaging 34.63 with the bat and taking eight wickets across his first seven Tests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He was the odd man out at the selection table for the first Test, with Cameron Green the only all-rounder chosen in the XI that won by eight wickets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Josh Inglis is another possibility should Australia prefer a like-for-like option to Head, who has become known for his role as the middle-order aggressor in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Inglis memorably smacked a century on Test debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year but has averaged a meagre 5.66 across his two Tests since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Khawaja will now race the clock to be fit for the third Test in Adelaide from December 17 \u2014 the day before his 39th birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Even if he is able to recover, he is no guarantee to hold onto his spot for the remainder of the Ashes given a lean run of form that has yielded just one century since June 2023.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/programs\/abc-sport-daily\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Sport Daily podcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Sport Daily is your daily sports conversation.
