{"id":32247,"date":"2025-07-30T10:48:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T10:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/32247\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T10:48:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T10:48:12","slug":"motogp-stars-who-shone-and-struggled-at-the-suzuka-8-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/32247\/","title":{"rendered":"MotoGP stars who shone &#8211; and struggled &#8211; at the Suzuka 8 Hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend\u2019s 46th edition of the Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race will feature two current MotoGP riders: Jack Miller and Johann Zarco.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/889489\/johann-zarco\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zarco <\/a>returns to defend last year\u2019s victory with Honda, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1452\/jack-miller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miller <\/a>is back for the first time since 2017, joining an all-star factory Yamaha line-up to celebrate the manufacturer\u2019s 70th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Such is the prestige of the 8 Hours that it has long attracted international names, often drafted in by Japanese manufacturers from their Grand Prix or Superbike projects.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 45 winning line-ups to date, only 12 have been entirely Japanese, underlining the event\u2019s international flavour.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Zarco\u2019s 2024 triumph &#8211; alongside Takumi Takahashi and Teppei Nagoe &#8211; made him the fourth Frenchman to win at Suzuka, following in the footsteps of Herve Moineau (1983), Dominique Sarron (1986, &#8217;89), and Alex Vieira (1989).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at some other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MotoGP <\/a>stars who\u2019ve taken on the Suzuka challenge\u2026<\/p>\n<p>MotoGP world champions at Suzuka<\/p>\n<p>Valentino Rossi<\/p>\n<p>The last premier-class world champion to win the Suzuka 8 Hours was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1999\/valentino-rossi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Valentino Rossi<\/a>, back in 2001, the same year he claimed the final 500cc title.<\/p>\n<p>It was Rossi\u2019s second attempt at the race for Honda, both times alongside Honda&#8217;s WorldSBK champion and future Yamaha MotoGP team-mate Colin Edwards.<\/p>\n<p>After a crash ended their 2000 race early, the duo returned stronger in 2001 to take victory on the Honda VTR1000SPW.<\/p>\n<p>Casey Stoner<\/p>\n<p>After retiring from MotoGP at the end of 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/1158\/casey-stoner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Casey Stoner<\/a> made headlines with a racing comeback at the 2015 Suzuka 8 Hours for Honda.<\/p>\n<p>But disaster struck when a stuck throttle caused the Australian to crash while leading, leaving him with a broken shoulder and tibia. HRC later issued a public apology for the technical failure.<\/p>\n<p>Nicky Hayden<\/p>\n<p>During his rookie MotoGP campaign in 2003, future world champion Nicky Hayden partnered Ryuichi Kiyonari at Suzuka.
