That means this month could make or break some of the teams in that group, and it feels especially urgent for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who were thought of as an NBA Finals contender but are off to a disappointing 12-9 start through Nov. 30.

December is a unique month in the NBA calendar. It begins with six teams (five of them in the East) in the midst of stretches in which they are playing five games in seven days. But, because of the Emirates NBA Cup, it also includes a nine-day stretch (Dec. 8-16) in which the league is playing only 34 games. That offers teams an opportunity for some practice/recovery time and a bit of a reset, and we can expect some of them to take advantage.

Here’s a schedule breakdown for December.

• Note 1: To calculate the strength of schedule for the eight teams that advanced in the Emirates NBA Cup, the higher seed is assumed to win the four quarterfinal games. So there would be some slight adjustments if road teams win.

• Note 2: A rest-advantage game (or rest-disadvantage game) is one where one team played the day/night before, but the other (the team with the advantage) did not. Teams were 41-37 (.526) in rest-advantage games, 20-19 (.513) at home and 21-18 (.538) on the road, through Nov. 30.

All records are through Sunday, Nov. 30.

December strength of schedule

Here’s a look at the December schedule for every team, sorted from the toughest (regarding cumulative opponent winning percentage) to the easiest:

Team
OppPCT
B2B
H | R
O | U

1.
LA Clippers
.609
1
5 | 7
8 | 4

2.
Utah
.602
4
8 | 5
9 | 4

3.
Atlanta
.579
4
9 | 5
9 | 5

4.
Los Angeles Lakers
.573
2
5 | 6
9 | 3

5.
Orlando
.549
2
6 | 7
9 | 5

6.
Phoenix
.546
1
2 | 10
9 | 3

7.
Sacramento
.545
2
5 | 7
7 | 5

8.
Charlotte
.538
1
6 | 7
9 | 4

9.
San Antonio
.537
1
7 | 7
9 | 5

10.
Dallas
.531
2
5 | 8
8 | 5

11.
Golden State
.517
2
5 | 8
8 | 5

12.
Oklahoma City
.512
2
8 | 4
8 | 5

13.
Toronto
.507
3
9 | 4
9 | 5

14.
New York
.505
2
7 | 7
10 | 4

15.
Washington
.505
3
8 | 6
8 | 6

16.
Portland
.502
3
7 | 7
8 | 6

17.
New Orleans
.500
2
10 | 4
8 | 6

18.
Indiana
.498
2
8 | 6
9 | 5

19.
Boston
.496
2
5 | 7
6 | 6

20.
Denver
.486
1
6 | 8
8 | 6

21.
Miami
.481
3
5 | 8
8 | 5

22.
Philadelphia
.475
2
6 | 6
5 | 7

23.
Minnesota
.453
0
8 | 6
6 | 8

24.
Milwaukee
.447
2
5 | 8
6 | 7

25.
Cleveland
.447
3
8 | 6
6 | 8

26.
Brooklyn
.446
1
7 | 4
5 | 6

27.
Detroit
.432
2
5 | 8
4 | 9

28.
Chicago
.430
1
9 | 5
8 | 6

29.
Memphis
.419
1
6 | 6
4 | 8

30.
Houston
.405
3
5 | 8
5 | 8

OppPCT = Cumulative opponent winning percentage (as of Nov. 30)
B2B = Back-to-backs (includes five Nov. 30-Dec. 1 back-to-backs)
H | R = Home games | Road games
O | U = Games vs. teams that entered the month over and under .500

Eastern Conference notes

The Hawks could be grounded by a tough December, while the Cavs could gain ground in the East race.

The Hawks have the East’s toughest December schedule regarding cumulative opponent winning percentage (.602).
