We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are sounding the alarm after an unusually high number of sightings of sea snakes washed up on beaches in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Over a dozen highly venomous sea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/snakes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">snakes<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/sea-cucumber-oregon-seaside-beach-b2849806.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">washed up dead<\/a> or become stranded in Australia\u2019s Nanga Bay since October, raising concerns about their marine ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Australia\u2019s waters are home to over 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/species\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">species<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tv\/lifestyle\/australia-sea-snakes-black-ringed-mangrove-b2493755.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sea snakes<\/a>, all of which are classified as protected marine species, and two are critically endangered.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are unsure exactly what is causing the high number of sea snakes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/killer-whales-mass-stranding-argentina-beached-b2846426.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wash up on the shore<\/a>, and urged the public to help record any sightings on the Australian Sea Snakes Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSea snake numbers are declining, but we are unsure why. What we do know is that they are often caught as \u2018bycatch\u2019,\u201d the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you come across any sea snake strandings in Shark Bay\/Gathaagudu, either in real life, or on other groups, could you please encourage people to report strandings here,\u201d sea snake researcher Blanche d&#8217;Anastasi posted in a Facebook group, which has since gathered over a dozen posts of strandings.<\/p>\n<p>However, researchers urged the public not to handle the stranded sea snakes as they are highly venomous and have a delicate spine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSea snakes are aquatic and have very fragile tissue, bones and joints, fit for life underwater,\u201d Ms d\u2019Anastasi said in a post.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Dead-yellow-bellied-sea-snake-washed-up-at-Shoalwater-Bay-Western-Australia.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dead yellow-bellied sea snake washed up at Shoalwater Bay, Western Australia\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>Dead yellow-bellied sea snake washed up at Shoalwater Bay, Western Australia (Wikimedia Commons)<\/p>\n<p>Experts are still trying to understand what is causing the stranding events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know sea snakes really don&#8217;t cope well with really big weather events, they get caught up in all of the amphibolis sea grass that washes up after cyclones,&#8221; Ms d&#8217;Anastasi told ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue sea snakes have no need to come ashore, so when one becomes stranded, there is most likely an underlying illness or injury,\u201d she posted on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, following a deadly heatwave that hit Shark Bay in 2010, there was reportedly a 76 per cent decline in the local population of sea snakes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sea snakes are something that used to be really quite abundant, and then following that heatwave they&#8217;ve really declined savagely,&#8221; the researcher said.<\/p>\n<p>Experts also urged the public not to push stranded snakes back into the water as beached Sea Snakes tend to wash ashore again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay at a safe distance from the animal and do not touch it.
