\n\tQuentin Tarantino<\/a> has named Ridley Scott\u2019s \u201cBlack Hawk Down\u201d the best movie of the 21st century, saying Scott\u2019s \u201cfeat of direction is beyond extraordinary.\u201d The Oscar-winning filmmaker revealed his top 10 picks during an interview on \u201cThe Bret Easton Ellis\u201d podcast<\/a> (via World of Reel<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\n\tThe list also features Lee Unkrich\u2019s \u201cToy Story 3\u201d (#2), Sofia Coppola\u2019s \u201cLost in Translation\u201d (#3), Christopher Nolan\u2019s \u201cDunkirk\u201d (#4), Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cThere Will Be Blood\u201d (#5), David Fincher\u2019s \u201cZodiac\u201d (#6), Tony Scott\u2019s \u201cUnstoppable\u201d (#7), George Miller\u2019s \u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u201d (#8), Edgar Wright\u2019s \u201cShaun of the Dead\u201d (#9) and Woody Allen\u2019s \u201cMidnight in Paris\u201d (#10).<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI liked it when I first saw it, but I actually think it was so intense that it stopped working for me, and I didn\u2019t carry it with me the way that I should\u2019ve,\u201d Tarantino said about selecting \u201cBlack Hawk Down\u201d as his top pick. \u201cSince then, I\u2019ve seen it a couple of times, not a bunch of times, but I think it\u2019s a masterwork, and one of the things I love so much about it is [\u2026] this is the only movie that actually goes completely for an \u2018Apocalypse Now\u2019 sense of purpose and visual effect and feeling, and I think it achieves it. It keeps up the intensity for 2 hours 45 minutes, or whatever it is, and I watched it again recently, my heart was going through the entire runtime of the movie; it had me and never let me go, and I hadn\u2019t seen it in a while. The feat of direction is beyond extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTarantino called his second place pick, \u201cToy Story 3,\u201d an \u201calmost perfect movie,\u201d adding: \u201cThat last five minutes ripped my fucking heart out, and if I even try to describe the end, I\u2019ll start crying and get choked up [\u2026] It\u2019s just remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a more surprising reveal, Tarantino said that he did not actually like Nolan\u2019s \u201cDunkirk\u201d when he first saw it. The movies is now his fourth favorite of the century.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat I now love about it is that I feel there\u2019s a real mastery to it, and I came around to it watching it again and again and again,\u201d he said. \u201cThe first time, it\u2019s not like it left me cold \u2014 it was so kind of gobsmacking, I didn\u2019t really know what I saw, it was almost too much, and then the second time I saw it, my brain was able to take it in a little bit more, and then the third time and the fourth time, it was just like, wow, it just blew me away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTarantino previously unveiled his #11 to 20 picks<\/a>, which included the following films: Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cWest Side Story\u201d (#20), Eli Roth\u2019s \u201cCabin Fever\u201d (#19), Bennett Miller\u2019s \u201cMoneyball\u201d (#18), Prachya Pinkaew\u2019s \u201cChocolate\u201d (#17), Rob Zombie\u2019s \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Rejects\u201d (#16), Mel Gibson\u2019s \u201cThe Passion of the Christ\u201d (#15), Richard Linklater\u2019s \u201cSchool of Rock\u201d (#14), Jeff Tremaine\u2019s \u201cJackass: The Movie\u201d (#13), Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado\u2019s \u201cBig Bad Wolves\u201d (#12) and Kinji Fukasaku\u2019s \u201cBattle Royale\u201d (#11).<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring this portion of \u201cThe Bret Easton Ellis Podcast,\u201d<\/a> Tarantino went viral for noting the similarities<\/a> between his #11 pick, \u201cBattle Royale,\u201d and \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d franchise.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI do not understand how the Japanese writer didn\u2019t sue Suzanne Collins for every fucking thing she owns,\u201d Tarantino said. \u201cThey just ripped off the fucking book! Stupid book critics are not going to go watch a Japanese movie called \u2018Battle Royale,\u2019 so the stupid book critics never called her out on it. They talked about how it was the most original thing they\u2019d ever fucking read. As soon as the film critics saw the film they said, \u2018What the fuck! This is just \u201cBattle Royale\u201d except PG!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTarantino has shared variations of his favorite-films list over the years. In 2020, he named David Fincher\u2019s \u201cThe Social Network\u201d the best movie of the 2010s, saying in an interview with Premiere (via IndieWire<\/a>): \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s \u2018The Social Network,\u2019 hands down. It is number one because it\u2019s the best, that\u2019s all! It crushes all the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n
