Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser, a born hustler and talented ping-pong player, who is\u00a0loosely based on the real-life American table tennis champion Marty Reisman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe film, which had a surprise screening at the <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/timothee-chalamet-marty-supreme-first-reactions-josh-safdie-1236394559\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/timothee-chalamet-marty-supreme-first-reactions-josh-safdie-1236394559\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Film Festival<\/a> in October, has received an impressive 95 percent critics\u2019 score on Rotten Tomatoes as of Tuesday afternoon. And in addition to the movie\u2019s overall praise, Chalamet, in particular, is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/oscar-predictions-2026-feinberg-forecast-before-thanksgiving\/best-actor-185\/\">receiving Oscar buzz<\/a> for his work in the picture. The Dune actor previously told <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/marty-supreme-table-tennis-event-ny-airbnb-1236439432\/\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that he spent years training to play the sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRead on to see what critics are saying about the film, which opens in theaters on Dec. 25 and stars Gwyneth Paltrow; Tyler, The Creator; Kevin O\u2019Leary; Fran Drescher; and Odessa A\u2019zion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTHR\u2018s chief film critic David Rooney, <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-josh-safdie-1236432539\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-josh-safdie-1236432539\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes in his review<\/a>, \u201cThis genre-defying original is an exhilarating sports comedy, a scrappy character study, a thrumming evocation of early \u201850s New York City \u2014 plus a reimagining of all those things. Think of it as\u00a0Uncut Gems\u00a0meets\u00a0Catch Me If You Can\u00a0and maybe you\u2019re halfway there.\u201d Rooney also adds that the film is \u201ca kinetic portrait of a life in perpetual motion,\u00a0Marty Supreme\u00a0is a wonder. Calling something \u2018a wild ride\u2019 is one of the most hackneyed quote-whore favorites \u2014 see also: \u2018What a ride!\u2019 \u2018The thrill ride of the summer!\u2019 and \u2018A nonstop rollercoaster ride!\u2019 \u2014 but for this wraparound sensory experience, it\u2019s a neat fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRooney also praises Paltrow\u2019s performance, which marks her acting return after a five-year hiatus, calling it, \u201csome of her best work. Playing a woman who has traded personal fulfillment for material comfort and security as a trophy wife in a loveless marriage, she taps into a melancholy, fractured grace that recalls her role in\u00a0The Royal Tenenbaums,\u201d he writes. \u201cIt\u2019s a lovely performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/01\/entertainment\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-wins-in-the-best-movie-of-the-year\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/01\/entertainment\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-wins-in-the-best-movie-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York Post<\/a>\u2018s Johnny Oleksinski writes, \u201cIt\u2019s cinematic Mountain Dew. You\u2019ll be wired for the entire two-and-a-half hours,\u201d in his review before adding, \u201cIt makes you laugh hard and often, and even blush a bit. There\u2019s ample heart and passion in Marty\u2019s messy race to the top. And the 1950s Big Apple ensemble is so authentic it\u2019s as if the filmmakers kidnapped a downtown deli.\u00a0What a winner Marty Supreme is. Safdie, his team and especially his ace star are serving the best movie of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tClarisse Loughrey at The Independent praises Chalamet\u2019s performance. \u201cIf\u00a0Marty Supreme\u00a0exists to prove that Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet could have easily kicked it with the New Hollywood icons of the \u201970s, the Harvey Keitels and the Gena Rowlandses, then point proven. He\u2019s truly\u00a0one of our greatest talents,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-josh-safdie-b2876122.html\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/marty-supreme-review-timothee-chalamet-josh-safdie-b2876122.html\" target=\"_blank\">she writes in her review<\/a>. \u201cChalamet jerks his limbs around and leans in hungry, and he has the same irresistible, volatile energy that drove those early Al Pacino performances. The way the camera closes in on pockmarked skin, an elegantly etched unibrow and permanent wireframe glasses, only draws our attention to the actor\u2019s eyes, where, like Pacino, all the vulnerability lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBBC\u2019s Caryn James writes, \u201cChalamet\u2019s performance as Marty Mauser is so engaging that you can put his offscreen antics aside. And while last year his performance as Bob Dylan in\u00a0A Complete Unknown\u00a0was better than the film itself, Marty Supreme is as fresh, funny and exhilarating to watch as its hero,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20251128-marty-supreme-review\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20251128-marty-supreme-review\" target=\"_blank\">in her review<\/a>. \u201cThe film is full of unexpected turns. When Tears For Fears\u2019 \u2018Everybody Wants To Rule The World\u2019 plays on the soundtrack, you might recall that this is an actor who\u2019s openly stated that he\u2019s in \u2018<a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/timothee-chalamet-sag-awards-2025-best-actor-complete-unknown-1236145009\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/timothee-chalamet-sag-awards-2025-best-actor-complete-unknown-1236145009\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pursuit of greatness<\/a>\u2018 and desires to win an Oscar.
