OMAHA, Neb. \u2014 The World\u00a0Boxing Council released a\u00a0report saying that boxer and Omaha native Terence \u201cBud\u201d Crawford has been stripped of his super middleweight title.<\/p>\n
Crawford defeated Mexico\u2019s Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, becoming the first male boxer to capture\u00a0three unified division titles. The city of Omaha even celebrated the champ with a\u00a0parade\u00a0after the history-making win.<\/p>\n
In a release, the World Boxing Council says it first\u00a0contacted Crawford\u00a0after he failed to pay mandatory fees after his last two fights.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe WBC put Champion Crawford on\u00a0notice\u00a0regarding his failure to comply\u2026 The non-payment of the\u00a0Boxer\u2019s Bout Fees\u00a0for his last two fights: against\u00a0Israil Madrimov\u00a0and against\u00a0Sa\u00fal \u00c1lvarez.\u201d<\/p>\n
ESPN reports that Crawford earned a cool $50 million in the Alvarez fight. The WBC typically requires a 3% fee, but reduced it to 0.6% because of the size of the event’s payout. According to the WBC, that 0.6% fee was never paid.<\/p>\n
The WBC says\u00a0it reached out to Crawford and his manager before action was taken. But WBC says\u00a0it did not \u201creceive an acknowledgment of receipt nor any response to any of those communications.”<\/p>\n
Crawford took to social media posting an\u00a0expletive-filled\u00a0video giving his thoughts on the situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can take the f*****g belt. It\u2019s a trophy anyway,\u201d said Crawford.<\/p>\n
According to the WBC, Crawford had ample notification and multiple opportunities to respond. Currently, the WBC has not explicitly said it stripped the title, but that it had \u201cno choice but to act\u201d with an executive decision.<\/p>\n
