Channing Tatum<\/a> wishes he knew how to get more movies like Roofman into movie theaters. \u201cIf I had that answer, I think I\u2019d have a lot of money coming to me,\u201d he jokes to Consequence via Zoom. \u201cWe just need to figure out how to change that narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Roofman, Tatum plays Jeffrey, a well-meaning thief who escapes from prison and hides out inside a North Carolina Toys \u201cR\u201d Us, falling in love with a Toys \u201cR\u201d Us employee played by Kirsten Dunst<\/a> while he tries to figure out how to reunite with his own family. Based on a true story, it\u2019s a nuanced character drama with solid jokes and a lot of heart \u2014 the sort of movie that was more common to see in theaters 20 years ago, but now struggles to get theatrical distribution.<\/p>\n

Both Dunst and Tatum acknowledge the changes in today\u2019s world that have led to more people staying home. As Dunst puts it, \u201cI think COVID and iPhones really have made us a little lazy. It\u2019s also expensive to go to the movies, so I understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum admits that he\u2019s biased, because \u201cI just love seeing movies in the theater. But it\u2019s hard to convince people who don\u2019t want to leave their house, much less go pay $60 for a movie experience if they don\u2019t go, \u2018All right, this is a giant movie. It\u2019s a world-building movie that I need to see on the big screen.’\u201d<\/p>\n

However, what Tatum says he hates is when people outside the entertainment industry say, \u201cYou guys don\u2019t make any good movies anymore.\u201d Because from his point of view, by only going to see \u201cbig giant Marvel movies,\u201d audiences are missing out. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of good movies being made,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re just not going to see them in the theaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum recalls having a conversation along these lines in the year 2022, and asking the person complaining about the lack of good film: \u201cHave you seen T\u00e1r<\/a>? And they\u2019re like, \u2018No, I don\u2019t know what that movie is.\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Go see it. It\u2019s in the theater now. It\u2019s a great movie.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The challenge of Roofman, Tatum says, is that \u201cI can\u2019t generalize the movie. I love movies like that, where I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to get, but the trailer doesn\u2019t just give you everything: It kind of gives you a little piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tatum adds that \u201cI personally thought they were selling this movie too much as a comedy in the beginning. But I was like, \u2018Okay, but I want people to go see it.\u2019 It has beautiful themes in it, as well as some real crazy scenes where you\u2019re just like, \u2018Whoa, like that really happened?\u2019 So what do you sell it as, then? Like, a romance?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunst agrees, noting that the movie, to her, feels like \u201ca classic holiday movie that you want to see with your family. Gather around, everyone will enjoy it. And there\u2019s a lot of life positivity to it. It feels like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m seeing human beings and what they\u2019re actually struggling with.’\u201d<\/p>\n

As she continues, \u201cI do believe in our film and I feel like it has a lot of genuine emotions. We\u2019re not trying to spoon-feed you \u2014 it doesn\u2019t feel phony or manipulative. I think people react to that when they feel genuinely moved by something. This honestly is a movie that your whole family can go see together.\u201d<\/p>\n
