Before she became a pop-music showgirl herself, Sabrina Carpenter<\/a> idolized Taylor Swift <\/a>\u2014 making it all the more special when the latter invited the former to collaborate on the title track of The Life of a Showgirl, which dropped this fall.<\/p>\n

And in a cover story interview with Variety<\/a> published Wednesday (Dec. 3), the Gen-Z pop star opened up about the surreal experience of singing a duet with her childhood hero. \u201cTen-year-old me, for so many reasons, could not believe it \u2014 to hear our voices together,\u201d Carpenter told the publication, going on to explain that Swift was the one to reach out with the idea of working together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe definitely realized it was special, but I would have never been like, \u2018Hey, bestie, put me on a song,’\u201d she said. \u201cShe was so gracious to think of me for a song that spoke to our life experiences in such a real, genuine way. It really sums up what so many young women in this industry go through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Life of a Showgirl\u201d appears at the very end of Swift\u2019s Billboard 200<\/a>-topping October LP. Sampling audio from Carpenter\u2019s guest appearance one night on the Eras Tour, the track finds the two ladies singing about the hidden downfalls of being a young starlet eaten up by the entertainment industry. (\u201cDo you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins?\u201d Carpenter sings on the track. \u201cThey ripped me off like false lashes and then threw me away.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\u201ci know someone who\u2019s freaking out and it\u2019s me,\u201d the Work It star wrote on Instagram<\/a> after the collaboration was first announced in August.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the Variety interview, Carpenter opened up about her own album, Man\u2019s Best Friend, which builds upon the witty, NSFW writing style with which she first shot to superstardom on 2024\u2019s Short n\u2019 Sweet. Of the backlash to some of her PG-13 lyrics, the singer \u2014 who first found fame as a tween acting on Disney Channel\u2019s Girl Meets World \u2014 said, \u201cI think it wouldn\u2019t matter so much if I wasn\u2019t a childhood figure for some people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I also can\u2019t really help that,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s not my fault that I got a job when I was 12 and you won\u2019t let me evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n
