Which, of course, is when the World Cup kicks off. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/ireland-drawn-in-rugby-world-cup-group-with-scotland-uruguay-and-portugal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/ireland-drawn-in-rugby-world-cup-group-with-scotland-uruguay-and-portugal\/\">it felt that bit nearer on Wednesday morning when the draw for the pools was made<\/a>, Gerry Thornley running his eye over Ireland\u2019s opponents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">John O\u2019Sullivan brings you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/2027-rugby-world-cup-team-by-team-analysis-of-irelands-pool-d-opponents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/2027-rugby-world-cup-team-by-team-analysis-of-irelands-pool-d-opponents\/\">a team-by-team analysis<\/a> of that very opposition, Scotland, Uruguay and Portugal, while Gerry warns us that while the draw might have been kind, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/rugby-world-cup-kind-draw-gives-ireland-a-glimpse-of-route-through-tournament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/rugby-world-cup-kind-draw-gives-ireland-a-glimpse-of-route-through-tournament\/\">if Ireland\u2019s history at the World Cup has taught us anything<\/a> \u201cit is surely not to be presumptuous\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With plenty of other business to attend to before then, you\u2019d imagine Andy Farrell wouldn\u2019t be giving much thought to the World Cup. But, Johnny Watterson learnt, he is. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/its-already-started-believe-me-andy-farrell-admits-irelands-world-cup-preparations-are-under-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/03\/its-already-started-believe-me-andy-farrell-admits-irelands-world-cup-preparations-are-under-way\/\">\u201cIt\u2019s already started, believe me,\u201d Farrell said<\/a> of the preparations for the tournament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Not that we needed reminding, but Gerry did any way &#8211; Ireland have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/04\/andy-farrell-were-always-open-minded-to-do-the-right-thing-by-the-squad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/rugby\/2025\/12\/04\/andy-farrell-were-always-open-minded-to-do-the-right-thing-by-the-squad\/\">\u201cnever won a knockout tie of any hue\u201d<\/a> at the World Cup. Captain Caelan Doris doesn\u2019t believe, though, that that \u201chistorical baggage\u201d will weigh on the 2027 side. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The best news of all on Wednesday came from Poland where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/2025\/12\/03\/irish-teenager-john-shortt-wins-european-200m-backstroke-gold-medal-in-stunning-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/2025\/12\/03\/irish-teenager-john-shortt-wins-european-200m-backstroke-gold-medal-in-stunning-fashion\/\">18-year-old Galwegian John Shortt only went and won gold<\/a> in the 200 metres backstroke at the European Short-Course Championships. A \u201cstunning performance\u201d it was too, as Ian O\u2019Riordan tells us. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In Gaelic games, Gordon Manning and Muireann Duffy barely came up for air on Wednesday, so busy were they compiling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2025\/12\/03\/complete-guide-to-2026-intercounty-fixtures-in-league-and-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2025\/12\/03\/complete-guide-to-2026-intercounty-fixtures-in-league-and-championship\/\">a guide to the intercounty fixtures for 2026<\/a>. And Gordon somehow managed to find time to bring news of Ballyboden St Enda\u2019s captain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2025\/12\/04\/ballyboden-captain-shane-clayton-returns-just-in-time-for-leinster-sfc-decider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2025\/12\/04\/ballyboden-captain-shane-clayton-returns-just-in-time-for-leinster-sfc-decider\/\">Shane Clayton\u2019s availability for Saturday\u2019s Leinster club final<\/a> against Athy, having recovered from injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ciar\u00e1n Murphy, meanwhile, reflects on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2025\/12\/04\/ciaran-murphy-charlie-smyth-has-earned-his-shot-at-securing-nfls-most-unforgiving-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2025\/12\/04\/ciaran-murphy-charlie-smyth-has-earned-his-shot-at-securing-nfls-most-unforgiving-role\/\">Charlie Smyth becoming \u201cone of the stories of the Irish sporting year\u201d<\/a> by marking his NFL debut with a field goal from 56 yards.
