{"id":327579,"date":"2025-12-04T17:05:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T17:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/327579\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T17:05:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T17:05:11","slug":"lightning-sign-ryan-mcdonagh-to-3-year-12-3m-extension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/327579\/","title":{"rendered":"Lightning sign Ryan McDonagh to 3-year, $12.3M extension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAMPA, Fla. &#8212; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/tb\/tampa-bay-lightning\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tampa Bay Lightning<\/a> have signed veteran defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/4954\/ryan-mcdonagh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan McDonagh<\/a> to a three-year extension worth $12.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>General manager Julien BriseBois announced the deal Thursday. McDonagh will be 37 when the new contract kicks in; it counts $4.1 million against the salary cap through the 2028-29 season.<\/p>\n<p>McDonagh helped the Lightning win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021 and reach the Final in 2022 before losing in six games to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/col\/colorado-avalanche\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colorado Avalanche<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They traded him to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/team\/_\/name\/nsh\/nashville-predators\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nashville Predators<\/a> that summer to clear cap space at a time when it was not going up much because of the pandemic and reacquired him in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Record cap increases will have McDonagh account for less than 4% of the cap each of the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>McDonagh is currently injured, one of several players Tampa Bay has been missing, along with No. 1 defenseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/player\/_\/id\/5157\/victor-hedman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Hedman<\/a>.
