\n\tEuphoria<\/a> will jump ahead five years when the hit HBO drama returns<\/a>, and creator\/showrunner Sam Levinson<\/a> is teasing where the characters have ended up after all that time away.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe long-awaited return of Euphoria is coming in April 2026, HBO<\/a> revealed this week (with a specific date still to be announced), which will be more than four years after season two premiered on HBO. The series initially launched in 2018. (Here\u2019s a reminder of what happened at the end of season two<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

\n\tThe unusually long hiatus was due to a number of factors \u2014 including aligning the schedules for the in-demand cast<\/a>, Levinson\u2019s other HBO series The Idol\u00a0in the interim, and a cooling relationship between Levinson and star Zendaya<\/a>, as\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter\u00a0detailed in a cover story<\/a>\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a Content London event where HBO CEO Casey Bloys<\/a> unveiled the programmer\u2019s upcoming slate<\/a>, Levinson was interviewed about Euphoria to say that \u201cbeing out of the safety net of school\u201d is what the new season is about when the show catches up with the cast not only after high school graduation, but now after college. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe one thing we all agreed on is we can\u2019t go back to high school \u2014 although many, many shows have had 30-year-old high school students, we\u2019re not,\u201d Levinson said. \u201cFive years felt like a natural place [to jump] because if they had gone to college they\u2019d be out of college at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Zendaya returns as Rue, the starring addict <\/a>has found herself south of the border in Mexico in debt to drug dealer Laurie, played by Martha Kelly, \u201ctrying to come up with some very innovative ways to pay it off,\u201d shared Levinson.<\/p>\n

\n\tOne of the biggest spoilers that Levinson dropped is that Sydney Sweeney<\/a>\u2018s Cassie and Jacob Elordi<\/a>\u2018s Nate are not only engaged, but eventually get married this season. \u201cI promise that it will be an unforgettable night,\u201d he teased of the wedding, adding that when the season opens, \u201cCassie is living in the suburbs with Nate. They\u2019re engaged, and she\u2019s very addicted<\/a> to social media and envious of what appears to be the big lives that all of her high school classmates are living at this point in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHunter Schafer<\/a>\u2018s Jules, meanwhile, is in art school \u201cvery nervous about having a career as a painter and trying to avoid responsibility at all costs\u201d; Alexa Demi\u2019s Maddie is working at a Hollywood talent agency for a manager while having \u201cher own side hustles\u201d; and Maude Apatow<\/a>\u2018s Lexi is working as an assistant to a showrunner who is played by new castmember Sharon Stone.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tDuring his conversation with Bloys, Levinson acknowledged the mega-success of the cast during the hiatus, saying that everyone really wanted to come back, which prompted new contracts for the cast. \u201cYou want everyone to be there because they want to be there, and they\u2019re passionate about the work and excited about the story that we\u2019re telling,\u201d said the creator.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere are many new castmembers this season<\/a>, including Danielle Deadwyler<\/a>,\u00a0Eli Roth<\/a>,\u00a0Natasha Lyonne<\/a>, Rosal\u00eda, Marshawn Lynch, Sam Trammell and Asante Blackk, to name a few. While Eric Dane<\/a>,\u00a0who was recently diagnosed with ALS<\/a>, Chloe Cherry, Dominic Fike, Nika King and\u00a0Colman Domingo<\/a> are also returning, missing from the cast this season are Storm Reid, Austin Abrams and Javon Walton. Angus Cloud<\/a>, who played fan-favorite drug dealer Fezco, died July 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tLevinson summed up of what to expect, \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to write this show because there are aspects that I can draw upon in my own life, but at the end of the day, it\u2019s also about telling the story of what it\u2019s like to be out of the safety net of of school and trying to figure out who you are in the world and what matters to you. \u2026 The stakes are a bit higher than they were in the past because the consequences are real and no one\u2019s gonna swoop in and save you.<\/p>\n
