(ABC News: Curtis Rodda)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Treasury says its data about individuals and properties subject to the tax could change due to reassessments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Land tax does not apply to someone&#8217;s principal place of residence, but it can apply to investment properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Under Queensland&#8217;s land tax rules, an individual must pay the tax if the value of their land collectively exceeds a $600,000 threshold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The threshold has remained unchanged 2007. (ABC News: Lucas Hill)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s a good source of revenue&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">According to this year&#8217;s state budget, the government was expected to raise $2.47 billion from land tax in 2024-25 \u2014 up from $2.03 billion in 2023-24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That number is projected to increase further in 2025-26 to $2.81 billion, before climbing to $3.26 billion in 2026-27.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The budget papers note the jump in revenue last financial year reflected &#8220;strong land value growth&#8221; across the state.<\/p>\n<p>Read more on Australia&#8217;s housing market:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, University of Queensland economics professor John Quiggin said there was a good case for lowering the land tax threshold.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Land tax is the most efficient tax available to governments, and we have quite a generous threshold,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When we&#8217;re looking at where the government [can] raise revenue, if we compare that for example to raising it from gambling or stamp duty, land tax is really the best choice available to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a good source of revenue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brisban inner subrub house rooftops\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3a0e3eef0029d5212ceb3884bd9c4f21\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Of the 60,828 land tax payers, 50 owned over $10 million in land.
