Localized payments provider\u00a0Boku<\/a>\u00a0has received a new license from Brazil\u2019s central bank.<\/p>\n

The payment institution license,\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday (July 30), allows Boku to operate as a payment initiator and e-money issuer in Brazil, setting the stage for the company to make the country\u2019s Pix Autom\u00e1tico instant payment system available to merchants early next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur mission is to let consumers everywhere pay for what they love in the way they prefer. For merchants, that means offering localized options that unlock new growth,\u201d Boku CEO\u00a0Stuart Neal<\/a> said in a news release.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur commitment to expanding local payment options\u2014like Pix Autom\u00e1tico \u2014shows how innovation can drive financial inclusion at scale. Brazil is setting the pace and Pix Autom\u00e1tico, reflects that vision\u2014reaching more users and making everyday payments simpler and more inclusive,\u201d Neal added.<\/p>\n

Launched by the Central Bank of Brazil in 2020, Pix has become one of the country\u2019s most\u00a0preferred payment methods<\/a>. Research by PYMNTS Intelligence has shown that the number of transactions per month processed by Pix at the end of 2024\u00a0exceeded the combined total<\/a>\u00a0of debit and credit card transactions by 80%.<\/p>\n

The central bank introduced Pix Autom\u00e1tico in June, allowing consumers to make recurring payments for services like streaming and subscriptions.<\/p>\n

Speaking to PYMNTS about the launch of this service last month, Ralf Germer, CEO at PagBrasil, said, \u201cPix Autom\u00e1tico will be available to any user of Pix without any limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n

This includes not only the\u00a060% of Brazilians<\/a>\u00a0who don\u2019t have credit cards but also smaller and medium businesses that had lacked access to a proper system for recurring payments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis opens up entirely new customer segments, particularly for digital services and gaming platforms, where younger audiences often have Pix accounts but no credit cards,\u201d PYMNTS wrote. \u201cThe wider reach can directly translate into increased sales, as evidenced by anecdotal accounts of street vendors tripling their sales after accepting Pix.\u201d<\/p>\n

A key advantage for merchants is the\u00a0absence of chargebacks<\/a>\u00a0with Pix Autom\u00e1tico, Germer added, noting that once a Pix payment is made, \u201cit\u2019s paid; it\u2019s not possible to charge back at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
