Scribe has retained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclist.co.uk\/in-depth\/hookless-rims\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hooked beads<\/a> for wide tyre compatibility and has optimised the wheels for 28mm to 30mm wide tyres.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclist.co.uk\/newsletters?utm_source=Web&amp;utm_medium=Banner&amp;utm_campaign=NewsletterBanner1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Newsletter-flash-v2-1-970x332.webp.webp\" alt=\"'sign up to the cyclist newsletter' banner, saying 'opinions, offers, insights and updates'\" class=\"wp-image-202092\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wavy spokes<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SpokeFull-970x675.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-229776\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Scribe says its new OSL8 carbon spokes are designed to offer stiffness, compliance and best-in-class aerodynamics. It says the wavy profile makes the spokes around 0.5 watts faster than the more usual 5mm bladed carbon spokes seen on carbon spoked wheels. The spokes have conventional nipples, so they can be tightened or replaced.<\/p>\n<p>In the Ultra \u00c9lan wheels there are 20 straight-pull spokes that are laced 1:1 front and rear; in the Core Ultra wheels, the 24 front and rear steel spokes are J-bend and also arranged 1:1.<\/p>\n<p>Hubs<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/RearHub2-970x675.webp.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-229771\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The new wheelsets turn on Scribe\u2019s new Ultra hubs, which Scribe says have been designed from scratch for the aero carbon spokes. The Ultra \u00c9lan hubs have T-headed anchor points to prevent spoke rotation, while in the Core Ultra wheels, the flange edges are chamfered to enhance airflow. Both hubsets turn on ceramic TPI Grade 3 bearings and include a 36-tooth ratchet freehub. You can choose between Shimano HG11, SRAM XDR and Campagnolo freehubs.<\/p>\n<p>Weight and pricing<\/p>\n<p>The Ultra \u00c9lan 5\u2019s 1,149g claimed weight represents a decrease of over 100g from Scribe\u2019s previous generation \u00c9lan Superlight+ 50, which has a 1,268g claimed weight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We rated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclist.co.uk\/reviews\/scribe-elan-sl-50-carbon-wheelset-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c9lan Superlight+ 50 wheelset<\/a> when we reviewed the wheelset recently, commenting on its top-notch build quality and its performance, thanks to the low mass and stiffness, along with its crosswind stability.
