Miquelle, a tiger conservationist based in Russia\u2019s Far East for more than three decades, had plenty of stories to tell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000l3b6ne6h45apq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the book never materialized, and in 2021, Slaght finally asked his friend and colleague at the Wildlife Conservation Society if he was ever going to write it. Probably not, Miquelle told him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000m3b6nui3utih3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat if I write it instead?\u201d Slaght asked him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000n3b6n1kow8mx6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Four years and 512 pages later, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.penguin.co.uk%2Fbooks%2F455951%2Ftigers-between-empires-by-slaght-jonathan-c%2F9780241633458&amp;data=05%7C02%7Crebecca.cairns%40cnn.com%7C661721b0fbf04c2403c808de27946c3f%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638991715582156568%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=ukp3ymPPix%2BiTZxssMsbEeYzKh8onXgBms0BXxd3gKA%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tigers Between Empires<\/a>\u201d tells the remarkable story of what Slaght describes as the world\u2019s longest-running tiger research program, the Siberian Tiger Project.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000o3b6nu0xjv559@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The international collaboration, led by former moose biologist Miquelle and Russian rodent researcher Zhenya Smirnov, saw a team of American scientists provide funding and technology to support the field expertise of Russian conservationists to track and monitor Amur tigers, more popularly known as Siberian tigers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000p3b6ni4i9q0fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weaving together history and folklore, scientific discovery and wilderness adventure, the book is equal parts educational and exhilarating as it transports readers to Russia\u2019s formidable, freezing and remote Far East to save the world\u2019s largest big cat from rampant poaching and logging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000q3b6npdf2dq8v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a story worth telling,\u201d Slaght told CNN in a video call, adding that the project shows \u201cthat it is possible for people from different backgrounds to work together and achieve considerable success when their passions are focused on the same target.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000s3b6nm91gb544@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Numbering around 3,000 in the mid-19th century, Russia\u2019s tiger population fell to just 30 animals in the 1930s, writes Slaght.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000t3b6n1q7cg5xj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite a remarkable comeback in the second half of the 20th century, due to hunting restrictions and protected reserves, the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991 saw an uptick in poaching.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000u3b6nsd9pulpk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Luckily, the Siberian Tiger Project launched just months later. At the time, radiotelemetry collars to track wildlife were widely used in the US, but had been unavailable to scientists in the Soviet Union. American scientists had no idea how to track or capture tigers, and Russian conservationists didn\u2019t know how to safely sedate and collar the big cats. Together, they would fill in knowledge gaps and uncover the secrets of tiger behavior and biology.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000v3b6n3ur1bv6u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The colorful cast of characters \u2014 so many, that the book begins with a list of names and roles \u2014 includes several of the 114 tigers captured and released during the project.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000w3b6nvjs5ufds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you have a 30-year data set, the way the Siberian Tiger Project does, when you can track an individual tiger from the first year of his life through to death, the information you can glean \u2014 these aren\u2019t anonymous, numbered study animals,\u201d says Slaght.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/a37-9780374610982-20251204042448450.jpg\" alt=\"Tigress Olga pictured during her second capture, when her collar was replaced. She was darted and partially sedated from a helicopter.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1703\" width=\"1079\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000x3b6n8rjo8s86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Olga, the first tiger ever collared by the project, was followed for 13 years, from a juvenile living in her mother\u2019s territory to her death. She became a fixture for both the conservationists and the community: in one passage, a hunter tells Miquelle he didn\u2019t shoot Olga when he saw her in the woods because he recognized her from the collar.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000y3b6nq9vgjx1y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey quickly become individuals, and I very much wanted to capture that,\u201d Slaght adds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois1000z3b6ngfeuo6fx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The data from the radio collars, and later GPS collars, allowed researchers to slowly unravel the secret lives of these elusive predators, including feeding habits, kill rates and range inheritance between families \u2014 where a female tiger passes down her established territory to her daughters, creating a lineage of tigers that occupies the same areas. This new-found knowledge on big cat ecology resulted in nearly 200 scientific publications on tigers, leopards and their prey, writes Slaght.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois100103b6n3lwv86l5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even with collars, sightings were rare: Olga was only observed in the wild for 15 minutes over 13 years. Without telemetry, Slaght says, \u201cit\u2019s impossible to actually see these animals, to get any sense of what they\u2019re doing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois100123b6ngs398m8g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of course, not all the human-tiger interactions in the book are so wholesome.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200133b6nuzng9wse@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data from the project\u2019s first decade showed that 75% of tiger deaths were caused by poaching \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/panthera.org\/end-tiger-poaching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a threat that persists today<\/a>. After the Soviet collapse, Russia\u2019s Far East faced a prolonged economic crisis: poverty drove hunting not only of tigers for trade but of prey species like deer for food.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200143b6nhs2085qo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The \u201cstruggle\u201d of being a tiger \u2014 the constant threat of poaching and the endless hunt for the next meal \u2014 surprised Slaght: \u201cPeople have this idea of tigers as these big, graceful creatures. You see pictures of them sitting around, licking themselves, just having a nice time. But it\u2019s tough. They have short, violent lives.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200153b6nfqm9nbk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over its first two decades, the project pioneered non-lethal tiger snaring methods that would be replicated by conservationists and scientists in tiger ranges across Asia, and data gathered from the Siberian Tiger Project\u2019s population surveys supported recommendations for new reserve areas, which ultimately doubled the amount of land previously protected.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/a25-9780374610982-20251204042557412.jpg\" alt=\"In 1992, Lena the tiger was poached just months after giving birth to four cubs. The Siberian Tiger Project found her collar in the snow, and rescued the orphaned cubs, who were hiding in the snow nearby waiting for their mother to return.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3557\" width=\"5336\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200163b6n4gticrev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From 2010, though, the book notes that foreign organizations were under greater suspicion from the Russian government, and the Siberian Tiger Project \u2014 backed by the US-headquartered Wildlife Conservation Society \u2014 had lost much of its influence by 2016. (Miquelle even found himself temporarily refused entry to Russia in 2013, writes Slaght, an incident that signaled eroding relationships.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9udk3001o3b6n0leoe01c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This worsened after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/a> in 2022, when many foreign NGOs, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2023\/06\/21\/russia-bans-wwf-environmental-group-a81582\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WWF and Greenpeace<\/a>, were banned from operating in the country; and after 30 years living in Russia\u2019s Far East, Miquelle returned to the US permanently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200173b6n2n3sh8gi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the country\u2019s tiger numbers had <a href=\"http:\/\/programmes.putin.kremlin.ru\/en\/tiger\/news\/26164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nearly doubled<\/a> since 2010, from 390 adults to 750 individuals. But the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/fr\/species\/15955\/214862019#population\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">figures<\/a> from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), also published in 2022, estimate the adult population to be between 265 and 486, which it considers stable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200183b6nvq9b6dww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lack of transparency around the recent Russian census methodology and ongoing conservation efforts risks undermining the progress made, says Slaght. However, he\u2019s heartened to see that both the Russian and Chinese governments are interested in tiger conservation and are engaging in cross-border collaborations, pointing to the Land of Big Cats, a transborder reserve that joins national parks in both countries, as a positive move for tiger habitat protection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois200193b6nkomqbhg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey\u2019re looking at the population as a whole, which is exactly what needs to be done for conservation to be impactful,\u201d he adds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois2001b3b6nsn0qyl44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Slaght never worked with the Siberian Tiger Project, he has his own personal attachment to it. After completing his undergraduate in Russian language, Slaght served in the Peace Corps, and was based in the village of Terney \u2014 the headquarters of the Siberian Tiger Project.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois2001c3b6nu9zma2wx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He was one of three foreigners in the village \u2014 the others being Miquelle and John Goodrich, one of the project managers, who he quickly befriended and frequently joined on fieldwork.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois2001d3b6nvg1jm0l3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019d be in my kitchen on a Saturday morning, and I\u2019d hear a truck outside, and it was John. He\u2019s like, \u2018Do you want to go in a helicopter and try to catch a tiger?\u2019\u201d recalls Slaght.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/author-photo-jonathan-c-slaght-credit-to-anna-mason.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan C. Slaght, pictured, author of \" tigers=\"\" between=\"\" empires=\"\" and=\"\" currently=\"\" the=\"\" regional=\"\" director=\"\" of=\"\" wildlife=\"\" conservation=\"\" society=\"\" temperate=\"\" asia=\"\" program.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4426\" width=\"3422\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois2001e3b6n39bsd5a3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These early adventures inspired him to study conservation biology, and saw him return to Russia\u2019s Far East for his own studies on Blakiston\u2019s fish owl, the subject of his first book, the award-winning \u201cOwls of the Eastern Ice.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois2001f3b6njkquxqeh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Miquelle says this book\u2019s success and Slaght\u2019s skill as a writer ultimately convinced him to let someone else tell the story. Slaght spent hours interviewing Miquelle, who also provided access to his detailed daily journals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmis98eem00033b6na6hj079t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cJon has done an amazing job of bringing our project to life,\u201d Miquelle told CNN in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmisaccmr00013b6pl7nag7j6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI especially enjoy reading the earlier chapters about our first years. That first year was no doubt the most difficult in my life, but it was also one I cherish the most. The excitement of being in a new place, the incredibly difficult tasks in front of us, and ultimately the successes we were able to achieve were all so memorable \u2013 it\u2019s just great to see them in print.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmis98eem00043b6n9r4x5wuc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Slaght describes the book as an ode to conservation fieldwork and a region he loves \u2014 and a reminder not to take the natural world for granted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmir9ois2001g3b6navgc954s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne thing I don\u2019t want people to take away from the book is that this is a solved conservation problem. It\u2019s not,\u201d says Slaght. \u201cIt\u2019s a conservation success story, but constant vigilance is needed. These cats barely crawled back from the edge of extinction.
