The crowd around McCarthy watched one morning last month in tense silence as he attempted and failed during six passes of a plane overhead to get the perfect image.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j00053j6o64jroldm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            High above, his friend Gabriel C. Brown was perched on the edge of his plane seat, waiting for the signal to leap. \u201cOriginally, we we\u2019re like, if we mess up the first attempt, I can land, repack, go up and try again,\u201d Brown said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitg22kf000a3b6nkgay0p5z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, their pilot announced that he was only available that morning, according to Brown. With just one more chance to get it right before the sun climbed too high, McCarthy counted down as the plane soared to the right spot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j00063j6ows0em2wy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With this limited window, Brown told McCarthy: \u201cDon\u2019t tell me to jump unless you are absolutely sure.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitgjjv8000i3b6n5if3xswv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The time came and McCarthy counted down, \u201cThree, two, one, go!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitgigbc000g3b6n7dm1ws18@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As Brown fell, he asked McCarthy through the headset wired to his iPhone, \u201cDid you get it?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitg4uqf000c3b6nxu7wzoi1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At last, McCarthy captured it: a lone silhouette frozen in front of the sun\u2019s textured face. \u201cIt was perfect,\u201d McCarthy said of the successful attempt. \u201cWe knew right away we got something really special.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j00093j6o6e4ca8ki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a child, McCarthy\u2019s room was covered in glow-in-the-dark planets and filled with space toys. At age seven, he would walk out to his backyard telescope with his father, where they would gaze up at Saturn and Jupiter. He was captivated, he recalled, even if at the time he didn\u2019t fully understand what he was seeing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000a3j6obembnfq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Years later, when McCarthy described himself as \u201can adult with a boring desk job\u201d and \u201c500 bucks to kick around,\u201d he decided to buy another telescope. He then gazed at the sky and was overwhelmed by \u201cthis feeling that I was just, like, very, very, very small, but also, like, very significant,\u201d he said. \u201cI was like, wow, I\u2019m a part of the universe that is self-aware enough to appreciate the beauty of the universe, and here I am witnessing it. So, I wanted to share that moment with people.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000b3j6ovgtw1hq9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eager to capture and spread that wonder, he pressed an old iPhone to the telescope\u2019s eyepiece and took a blurry photo. Unsatisfied, he cobbled together adapters to connect a camera to the telescope.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmite0ptc00003j6omrpt13vz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The photos weren\u2019t very good, he said, but taking them scratched an itch. \u201cI was like, I want to do this even more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000c3j6oh54w01fq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, he took a leap of faith and decided to make a career out of it, with a mission of helping others share in his awe \u2014 the sense of being small yet connected to something vast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000e3j6o1zvrw30v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the next six years, McCarthy\u2019s projects got more complex. After photographing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DOyZai9EfQj\/?igsh=bnF2d3dqejgybHVi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rocket traveling across the sun<\/a>, he began searching for a new challenge.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/defeating-gravity-full-size.jpg\" alt=\"Prior to capturing \" the=\"\" fall=\"\" of=\"\" icarus=\"\" mccarthy=\"\" took=\"\" this=\"\" photo=\"\" a=\"\" rocket=\"\" traveling=\"\" across=\"\" sun.=\"\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2645\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000f3j6o0i9pyv27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It wasn\u2019t until his first experience of skydiving that McCarthy settled on his next project and decided to team up with Brown, an avid skydiver, to bring a new idea to life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000g3j6oerawz9bz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe lightbulb went off because we just got finished skydiving. We\u2019re like, what if somebody jumps out of a plane in front of the sun?\u201d said McCarthy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000h3j6ow5367xxg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It sounded nearly impossible. To get the perfect shot, the sun had to be low, the jumper high, and McCarthy positioned precisely where their paths would align.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000i3j6o9kfmt25g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the pilot flew the plane into the perfect position between the sun and the camera, the telescopes acted like mirrors and sent up a bright flash of sunlight, indicating to the pilot that they were lined up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000k3j6ombddt9ye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For McCarthy, the name is not about tragedy, but rather the power of nature compared to our own smallness. The sun, he explained, is a perfect example of a force we can\u2019t control. No matter what we do, it keeps burning.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/the-fall-of-icarus-fall-size-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"McCarthy used image stacking, aligning and combining thousands of frames, to sharpen the sun\u2019s features and reduce noise in the photo.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000l3j6o09brmjsb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The legend of Icarus tells of a young man who escaped imprisonment with his father, Daedalus, by taking flight on wings made of feathers and wax. Before they set off, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too high, where the sun\u2019s heat could melt the wax, and not too low, where the sea\u2019s spray would dampen the wings making them too heavy to fly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitge32m000e3b6nnv1pe2j0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Icarus, overcome with the power of flight, ignored the warning and climbed higher, until the sun softened the wax and sent him falling into the sea. The myth has come to symbolizes both human ambition and our limits. The photo, says Brown, is a \u201ctestament to human achievement, but also to human hubris.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000m3j6ofuabpsts@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But art isn\u2019t only defined by those who create it. \u201cI\u2019d rather see what people think when they look at it,\u201d said McCarthy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000o3j6o9ask3vye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Connor Matherne, a fellow astrophotographer who worked on a previous project with McCarthy, saw the published image and knew: \u201cHe\u2019s done it again. This is another spectacular photo, really pushing the envelope.\u201d McCarthy\u2019s work is seen as raising the bar for astrophotographers, inspiring others to attempt the seemingly impossible, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000p3j6o7cxix67x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            McCarthy, however, said that much of the online discussion of his photo questioned its legitimacy, a challenge that many astrophotographers face with the rise of AI and advanced editing tools.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000q3j6ol8zz4dmo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anticipating the public skepticism, McCarthy filmed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DRBAaqLkvye\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">behind the scenes footage<\/a> as he prepared for and captured the shot. He also made public the details of his postproduction work using image stacking \u2014 aligning and combining thousands of frames to sharpen the sun\u2019s features and reduce noise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmitcc45j000r3j6owqmn2a8k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt can be frustrating to spend 40 hours on a photo only to have people dismiss it as fake,\u201d Matherne noted.
