Last month, an injured opossum arrived at\u00a0Cape Wildlife Center<\/a> in Barnstable, Massachusetts. She was found to be suffering from multiple facial injuries after an apparent vehicle strike, but the opossum proved to be a fighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite all this, she was able to stand and walk and was alert and aware of her surroundings,\u201d her caretakers wrote<\/a>. \u201cThis quick assessment let us know she had a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opossum\u2019s road to recovery was to be a long one, but her spirit has been unstoppable \u2014 and a recent incident at the clinic proves it.<\/p>\n

Cape Wildlife Center<\/a><\/p>\n

After a touch-and-go beginning, the opossum’s condition improved enough that she attempted something no one expected.<\/p>\n

Arriving to the furry patient\u2019s recovery room, her caretakers found her kennel door wide open and her missing. However, she didn\u2019t get far.<\/p>\n

To locate the opossum, her caretakers just had to use their ears:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur opossum patient pulled a great escape overnight,\u201d Cape Wildlife Center wrote. \u201cBut she made it very easy for us to quickly locate her under the shift cage, thanks to her loud snoring.\u201d<\/p>\n

After breaking free, the little opossum was all tuckered out.<\/p>\n

The opossum\u2019s attempted departure had been unauthorized, but it came as an encouraging sign that her will to live and be free remains undaunted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re extremely pleased with this mighty marsupial\u2019s recovery journey,\u201d her caretakers wrote. \u201cAfter the surgery and treatment she\u2019s been through for jaw fractures and ocular trauma, we love seeing her resting so comfortably and continuing to get better day by day!\u201d<\/p>\n

If all continues to go as planned, the opossum will one day be released back into the wild \u2014 to live, roam and snooze where nature intended.<\/p>\n
