{"id":331753,"date":"2025-12-07T01:21:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T01:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/331753\/"},"modified":"2025-12-07T01:21:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T01:21:09","slug":"goolugatup-heathcote-art-gallery-turned-into-a-home-for-jessee-lee-johns-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/331753\/","title":{"rendered":"Goolugatup Heathcote art gallery turned into a home for Jessee Lee Johns exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">An art gallery has been turned into a house to make people think about what they need to feel comfortable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Dwelling, an exhibition by Jessee Lee Johns, is part of Goolugatup Heathcote\u2019s annual site-responsive program Tilt, which has been running for 18 years and commissions WA artists to create new works that reflect the site\u2019s history and heritage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Johns\u2019 installation reimagines the gallery as a home, inviting visitors to explore the boundaries between art, architecture and everyday life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Visitors will encounter a letterbox, a bed, a shower cubicle and other fragments of suburbia all staged as sculpture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">They are intended to reflect the familiar functions of home and invite reflection on what people truly need to feel sheltered, comfortable and at ease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The pieces are constructed from found materials, including timber and fencing retrieved from the grounds of Goolugatup, and stand in contrast to nearby riverside mansions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWith Dwelling, I wanted to explore what happens when the idea of a house is stripped back to its essentials \u2014 when shelter becomes sculpture,\u201d Johns said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/a49cecbe79b20bc1805ceff72c14487756807297.jpg\" alt=\"The exhibition asks people to think about the idea of &quot;home&quot;.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconThe exhibition asks people to think about the idea of &#8220;home&#8221;. Credit: Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about building a perfect home but about questioning what we really need to feel safe and comfortable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe Tilt commission gave me the chance to respond directly to this place, and I\u2019ve used materials found around Goolugatup to shape something provisional and personal.
