Dwelling, an exhibition by Jessee Lee Johns, is part of Goolugatup Heathcote\u2019s annual site-responsive program Tilt, which has been running for 18 years and commissions WA artists to create new works that reflect the site\u2019s history and heritage.<\/p>\n
Johns\u2019 installation reimagines the gallery as a home, inviting visitors to explore the boundaries between art, architecture and everyday life.<\/p>\n
Visitors will encounter a letterbox, a bed, a shower cubicle and other fragments of suburbia all staged as sculpture.<\/p>\n
They are intended to reflect the familiar functions of home and invite reflection on what people truly need to feel sheltered, comfortable and at ease.<\/p>\n
The pieces are constructed from found materials, including timber and fencing retrieved from the grounds of Goolugatup, and stand in contrast to nearby riverside mansions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith Dwelling, I wanted to explore what happens when the idea of a house is stripped back to its essentials \u2014 when shelter becomes sculpture,\u201d Johns said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about building a perfect home but about questioning what we really need to feel safe and comfortable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Tilt commission gave me the chance to respond directly to this place, and I\u2019ve used materials found around Goolugatup to shape something provisional and personal. It\u2019s a house built from fragments and ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n
The blending of art and architecture is characteristic of Johns\u2019 practice.<\/p>\n
The Perth-born artist\u2019s previous projects include a self-declared micro-nation (The Commonwealth of New Bayswater), a gallery in a fly-tipping zone, and a brickworks company that doubles as social commentary.<\/p>\n
City of Melville senior curator and creative lead Jana Braddock said the exhibition was a thoughtful and quietly subversive response to place.<\/p>\n
\u201cJessee Lee Johns\u2019 Dwelling invites audiences to reflect on the boundaries between shelter, memory, and imagination,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough this year\u2019s commission, Jessee has reshaped the gallery into a space that feels both familiar and unexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Tilt commission has been running since 2008 and has previously engaged artists such as Curtis Taylor, Emma Buswell, Tom Muller, and Abdul-Rahman Abdullah and Anna Louise Richardson.<\/p>\n
