\n\tSongwriter Diane Warren<\/a> will do anything to get a great singer to record one of her tunes \u2013 up to and including latching onto their leg and refusing to let go until they agree. Such was the case with Cher, who initially hated the Warren song \u201cIf I Could Turn Back Time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat skirmish is one of the revealing anecdotes shared in the Oscar-contending documentary\u00a0Diane Warren: Relentless<\/a>, which charts her astonishing career.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLiterally, in the studio,\u201d she grabbed hold of Cher\u2019s limb until she complied, Warren recalled as she appeared at Deadline\u2019s Contenders Documentary<\/a> event along with director Bess Kargman<\/a>. \u201c[Cher] was like, \u2018Let go of my f*cking leg!\u2019 \u2018Yeah, when you say you\u2019ll try the song,\u2019\u201d Warren recalled retorting. \u201cWhen I said I\u2019d pay for the track, bitch said she\u2019d try it. But it\u2019s all good. It all worked out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThings have worked out very well indeed for Warren, who has earned a Grammy, an Emmy and a record 16 Oscar nominations<\/a>, as well as an honorary Academy Award<\/a>. Her publishing company is valued at half a billion dollars. Along with Cher, her songs have been recorded by Aerosmith (\u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Miss a Thing\u201d), Toni Braxton (\u201cUn-Break My Heart\u201d), Celine Dion (\u201cBecause You Loved Me\u201d), Beyonc\u00e9 (\u201cI Was Here\u201d) and so many others. As the documentary explores, Warren entered the music business without any connections.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy dad sold insurance. \u2026 I was [growing up] in Van Nuys \u2014 which, by the way, it was like being in Montana or something,\u201d Warren said. \u201cIt\u2019s like being somewhere that\u2019s not L.A. or California. It was not that many miles away but in a way a million miles away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat posed a major obstacle to success, but a bigger one came in the form of Warren\u2019s mother Flora, who did not warm to her daughter\u2019s aspirations as a musician.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHer mom really, really didn\u2019t support her,\u201d Kargman noted, \u201clike screamed at her father for getting [Diane] a guitar, screamed at her for practicing her music in the house, screamed at her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWarren explained: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t my mom thinking I wasn\u2019t talented, it was just like, \u2018How are you going to make a living?\u2019 She thought I\u2019d be there with a guitar and a cup. \u2026 I don\u2019t lose sight of this for a second, that I\u2019m one in a billion. \u2026 There was a lot of doors shut on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWarren also was bullied as a child and discouraged in her musical pursuits by other adults.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cShe also got kicked out of her first music class,\u201d Kargman noted. \u201cThe teacher said she had no future in music. \u2026 She\u2019s a miracle to me. What she has overcome and how fearless and fierce, also how self-deprecating she is, it\u2019s so refreshing. She\u2019s truly humble.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not all that impressed with myself,\u201d Warren commented. \u201cIf I\u2019m done with the song, even if it\u2019s great, I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, what\u2019s next?\u2019 It\u2019s always what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe song Warren wrote for the documentary, \u201cDear Me,\u201d is being submitted for Oscar consideration as Best Original Song. If the tune performed by Kesha goes on to earn an Oscar nomination, it would mark Warren\u2019s ninth consecutive nomination in the category and 17th\u00a0Academy Award nomination overall.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve never written a song for a movie about myself,\u201d Warren noted. \u201cIt was like, \u2018What do I do for a movie about me?\u2019 And then it was so clear, like a lightning bolt went off. I\u2019m like, \u2018I want to write a song to that young girl, that young girl that sat and felt like shit and felt so alone and the kids were super mean to, and that really felt misunderstood and unseen and unheard.\u2019 And I wanted to write a love song to her.\u201d<\/p>\n
