{"id":333731,"date":"2025-12-07T23:19:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T23:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/333731\/"},"modified":"2025-12-07T23:19:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T23:19:08","slug":"football-continues-climb-in-the-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/333731\/","title":{"rendered":"Football Continues Climb in the Polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW ORLEANS \u00a0\u2013 The Tulane football team is nationally ranked for the fourth consecutive week as the program comes at No. 17 in the Associated Press (AP) Poll and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches&#8217; Poll as was announced on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 7.<\/p>\n<p>The program moved up after being ranked at No. 21 in both the AP and in the Coaches&#8217; Poll last week, Nov. 23. The team is also ranked at No. 20 in the College Football Playoffs rankings that was released on Dec. 2.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 17 Green Wave totaled 521 points in the final AP poll before the start of the College Football Playoffs. Tulane is one of three teams in the American to be ranked this week as Navy is No. 22 while North Texas checks in at No. 23.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nTulane also garnered enough points (448) to be ranked in the top 25 in the Coaches&#8217; Poll. The program plus Navy (No. 25) are the American Conference representatives in the poll.<\/p>\n<p>After winning the American Conference Championship on Friday night, Dec. 5, for the second time in four seasons, the No. 20 Tulane football team (11-2) is playoff bound for the first time in school history as the program is seeded No. 11 and will faceoff with No. 6 seed Ole Miss (11-1) in Oxford, Miss at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 2:30 p.m. in a game that will be shown on TNT, the College Football Playoff Committee announced on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being the first-ever playoff appearance, the Green Wave are also the first team to ever make the playoffs from the state of Louisiana in the 12-team format.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Wave qualified for the CFP by being the fourth-highest ranked conference champion. The winner will go on to face No. 3 Georgia (12-1) in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Ole Miss and Tulane met earlier this season with the Rebels earning the 45-10 victory on Sept. 20.<\/p>\n<p>The team has started the 2025 season with 11 wins in the first 13 games including a pair of wins over Power 4 opponents in the regular season for the first time since 1988. The 34-21 victory over North Texas on Dec. 5 secured Tulane the program&#8217;s second conference title the last four seasons.<\/p>\n<p>The team earned 13 American All-Conference selections plus the Special Teams Player of the Year in <a href=\"https:\/\/tulanegreenwave.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/patrick-durkin\/16192\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"16192\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Durkin<\/a>. It was also the sixth time in the last seven years that Tulane had been selected to play in a bowl game (2018 \u2013 Cure Bowl, 2019 \u2013 Armed Forces Bowl, 2020 \u2013 Famous Idaho Bowl, 2022 \u2013 Cotton Bowl, 2023 \u2013 Military Bowl and 2024 \u2013 Gasparilla Bowl). Overall, it was Tulane&#8217;s 17th bowl appearance (1932 \u2013 Rose Bowl, 1935 \u2013 Sugar Bowl, 1939 \u2013 Sugar Bowl, 1970 \u2013 Liberty Bowl, 1973 \u2013 Astro Bluebonnet Bowl, 1979 \u2013 Liberty Bowl, 1980 \u2013 Hall of Fame Bowl, 1987 \u2013 Independence Bowl, 1998 \u2013 Liberty Bowl, 2002 \u2013 Hawaii Bowl, 2013 \u2013 New Orleans, 2018 \u2013 Cure Bowl, 2019 \u2013 Armed Forces Bowl, 2020 -Famous Idaho Bowl, 2022 \u2013 Cotton Bowl, 2023 \u2013 Military Bowl and 2024 \u2013 Gasparilla Bowl) with the program sporting an all-time record of 7-10 in bowl games.<\/p>\n<p>The program sports a 43-12 record over the last four seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/tulanegreenwave.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/coaches\/jon-sumrall\/7893\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7893\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Sumrall<\/a> has been one of the most successful coaches in the country over the last four seasons with a record of 43-11, two Sun Belt Conference championships, an American Conference title and a pair of double-digit winning streaks. He was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of Year and was twice named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year honor. Sumrall returned to Tulane after serving as the Green Wave&#8217;s Co-Defensive Coordinator for three years (2012-14). In 2013, he was a crucial part of Tulane&#8217;s run to the New Orleans Bowl, the program&#8217;s first postseason appearance since 2002 and third since 1988.
