{"id":334422,"date":"2025-12-08T07:16:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T07:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/334422\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T07:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T07:16:08","slug":"cornwall-man-pursues-mma-passion-after-life-changing-transplant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/334422\/","title":{"rendered":"Cornwall man pursues MMA passion after life-changing transplant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Three years ago Charlie Dugdale was fighting for his life as he battled a rare blood disorder. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After receiving a life-changing bone marrow transplant, he has turned his fighting spirit to the boxing ring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Dugdale, 20, from Liskeard, Cornwall, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gosh.nhs.uk\/conditions-and-treatments\/conditions-we-treat\/aplastic-anaemia\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aplastic anaemia, external<\/a> &#8211; a condition where the bone marrow and stem cells do not produce enough blood cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In the race to find a bone marrow donor, his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-cornwall-63755546\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">family organised a mass swab in 2022<\/a> to find a suitable match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But it was the charity Anthony Nolan which connected him with a 29-year-old man from Germany for the transplant, giving him a second chance at life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Since the operation, he has pursued his passion of mixed martial arts (MMA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He won his debut amateur fight at the Meltdown Fighting Championships in Bristol in September and recently met his hero Tyson Fury.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three years ago Charlie Dugdale was fighting for his life as he battled a rare blood disorder.
