It must be ratified by the membership. SEPTA\u2019S board of directors is scheduled to consider the agreement on Dec. 18. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The news marks a dramatic pivot. Negotiations looked grim at the end of last week and a strike was possible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cPatience was growing thin and management seemed unhurried. Usually, we would have been locked into a hotel until we got this done,\u201d TWU Local 234 President Will Vera said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On Friday, Vera declared <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/transportation\/septa-strike-bus-subway-trolley-union-20251205.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/transportation\/septa-strike-bus-subway-trolley-union-20251205.html\">he was out of patience at what the union saw as SEPTA\u2019s intransigence<\/a> on key demands and threatened to lead members in a walkout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Late Sunday afternoon, Shapiro\u2019s staff began a met with union leaders and SEPTA senior managers in the governor\u2019s Philadelphia office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Both sides <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/transportation\/septa-twu-local-234-contract-strike-averted-20251207.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/transportation\/septa-twu-local-234-contract-strike-averted-20251207.html\">credited Shapiro\u2019s intervention<\/a> for enabling them to make progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThe Governor and his people got key people from both sides in the same room last night, stopped the run-around, got promises from both sides and we reached a deal,\u201d Vera said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Members will receive an across the board 3.5% raise in each year of the contract, as well as an increased pension benefit during the duration of the deal, as well as changes in work rules and an increase in night-differential pay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The union\u2019s push for an increase in pensions and SEPTA\u2019s proposal for union members to pay a greater share of the cost of their healthcare coverage had emerged as perhaps the biggest obstacles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">TWU Local 234 represents about 5,000 bus, subway, and trolley operators, mechanics, cashiers, maintenance people, and custodians, primarily in the city.
