{"id":336654,"date":"2025-12-09T07:20:28","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T07:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/336654\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T07:20:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T07:20:28","slug":"rory-mcilroy-crowned-after-career-grand-slam-season-wins-sixth-agw-golf-writers-trophy-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/336654\/","title":{"rendered":"Rory McIlroy crowned after career Grand Slam season \u2014 wins sixth AGW Golf Writers\u2019 Trophy \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rory-mcilroy\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rory-mcilroy\">Rory McIlroy\u2019s<\/a> career standout year \u2013 which saw him become the first European male golfer to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/golf\/2025\/04\/14\/rory-mcilroys-career-grand-slam-the-six-men-who-have-achieved-place-in-golfs-pantheon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/golf\/2025\/04\/14\/rory-mcilroys-career-grand-slam-the-six-men-who-have-achieved-place-in-golfs-pantheon\/\">career Grand Slam<\/a> when winning the Green Jacket at Augusta \u2013 has won him the AGW Golf Writers\u2019 Trophy for an unprecedented sixth time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Northern Irishman finished his year\u2019s work at the Australian Open last weekend, which brought to an end a remarkable season in which he not only won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/the-masters\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/the-masters\">Masters<\/a> to join the exclusive six-man Grand Slam club but also included successes in The Players and the Amgen Irish Open, along with a starring role for Europe in winning the Ryder Cup at Bethpage among his achievements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Members of the Association of Golf Writers voted in overwhelming fashion to reward the 36-year-old for a career-defining year of triumph in which he also won a seventh DP World Tour Race to Dubai order of merit title, pulling himself clear of the great Severiano Ballesteros and just one shy of Colin Montgomerie\u2019s record tally of eight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to the news McIlroy said: \u201cI am honoured to win the Association of Golf Writers\u2019 Trophy for 2025, a very special year for me and my family in winning the Masters to become the first European player to complete the career Grand Slam, an Irish Open, being part of Europe\u2019s Ryder Cup win at Bethpage under Luke Donald\u2019s captaincy and also claiming a seventh Harry Vardon Trophy. It has been a truly special year. I would like to thank the Association of Golf Writers for their support and commitment to golf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McIlroy\u2019s previous wins in the AGW Golf Writers\u2019 Trophy came in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022 and 2024. The AGW Golf Writers\u2019 Trophy \u2013 as 2025 recipient \u2013 will be presented to McIlroy at the next annual dinner, in July 2026 at Royal Birkdale GC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/golf\/2025\/04\/14\/rory-mcilroys-career-grand-slam-the-six-men-who-have-achieved-place-in-golfs-pantheon\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golf\u2019s grand slam winners: Who are they?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p>Olympic golf disruption reshuffles major-championship calendar for 2028<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Golf\u2019s return to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olympic-games\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olympic-games\">Olympics<\/a> \u2013 brought back to the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016 \u2013 has had a knock-on effect with scheduling changes of the Majors, the most obvious being the US PGA\u2019s switch from August to a permanent slot in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And the 156th Open in 2028, at a venue yet to be confirmed, will \u2013 along with the ISPS Handa Senior Open and the AIG Women\u2019s Open \u2013 make a temporary move from its traditional July date to avoid a clash with the Olympics in Los Angeles, which take place on July 19th-29th that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All three championships have been moved back for that year alone: The 156th Open will be held from July 30th-August 6th, the ISPS Handa Senior Open will be held from August 7th-13th, and the AIG Women\u2019s Open from August 14th-20th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mark Darbon, chief executive of The R&amp;A, said: \u201cWe have worked collaboratively with the relevant bodies and our partners to agree alternative dates for staging our Major championships in 2028 to accommodate the Olympic golf competitions.
